Yea looks like something was living in that cavity.
Rich- on your 3rd pic, see the horizontal panel? While yer there, it may be worthwhile to unbolt that panel to inspect for corrosion. Very common. This has been discussed extensively in the past. Pulled mine off this past winter while I was working in the same area. It's a good idea to repair any rust now before it eats your subframe away.

Yep... I saw several threads regarding that and I did intend on checking and repairing if necessary. I'm removing all the heat shields up in there simply because theyre no longer needed with the new exhaust setup. I think tomorrow is my "Start Cleaning" day... I'll def tackle that too. Hopefully I'll only have some surface rust and I can grind it out and Por15.

This was the most thorough write-up of it I could find. I love this site - http://www.jackals-forge.com/lotus/9...issupports.htm

Tore these apart to see if there was any rott/rust. The pass side (shown) looks like nothing to worry about. I may paint it just to be safe. Drivers side showed a tiny surface area that I sanded down and will treat and paint soon. Pretty happy there are no nasty holes back there

Nothing a 2x4 can't handle! Having a lift is SO helpful...

impressive pics, I had been researching how to get the chain covers changed out and I guess the pics kinda helped me understand what is involved. Now looks to be a good time for you to do the same. Seems they are not changeable without removing the engine tin.

My question is does one have to remove the bumper to pull the engine tin>?

Hahaha.... Thanks. I spoke to Dave again today. He is in the middle of moving and a ton of other stuff and really doesn't have time to make me one, BUT he said he would eventually get over the hump and to check back with him in a few weeks. I'm not holding my breath but I'm crossing my fingers In the meantime, I can still get the gauge and sensors, etc and set it up somewhere like the glovebox for tuning and temp use.

Honestly, I've been in such an attack mode dismantling stuff, I havent even considered smarter or simpler ways to do other maintenance, LOL. I also have no prior 911 experience so all of these jobs are my maiden voyage into 911 wrenching (My philosophy is "bolts are bolts"). I believe you DONT have to remove the bumper but it def makes access a lot easier. I'm gonna leave mine be for now since I expect to probably need a clutch (I intend to do a LWF, RS clutch setup, etc.) by next winter... so I'll think about doing em then when I yank the engine again, haha.

I never found out why, so I'll ask ...

Juha,
After all that beautiful work installing that TPC in your 993, why'd you pull it?

I needed to drop the engine down some so, instead of using a jack or something to lower the rear of the engine after loosening the rear carrier mounts, the 2x4 is supporting the engine while I lift the car up with my lift I just lifted the car up high enough to get the 2x4 under it, lowered it down to just tension the 2x4 between the case and the floor, unbolted the carrier and then raised the car on the lift a few inches. Gave all the access room I needed to get the carrier out easily. Kinda like a short muffler stand but without the adjustability.

p.s., WEVO mounts arrived today!

Dan, I've been working SLOWLY... kinda annoying. I really wanna get it done for Hershey and possibly SoWo if I can find a couch to sleep on You got plans this weekend? It's supposed to be between 50-60F and mostly sunny... if you wanna come up, I should have a few things lined up to complete. Gotta pick up some hardware from the dealer friday.
