Default Alternator fan blade blew apart in Calgary

On my second drive of my new to me 1995 993 and either the fan blew apart and took out the belts, yes both fan belts, or the fan belts took out the fan.

Two blades were broken. I could only find one piece and it has evidence that it was previously cracked.

This being my first Porsche i dont really know any good resources in Calgary other than the dealer. If anyone from calgary can chime in i would really appreciate it.

I am not so sure i want to buy a used one given that the one i have shows evidence of having at least one blade being previously cracked and the car only has 70,000km on it.

Is this common? I will post pics tomorrow.

Be advised that there is a pulley update for the 95 993.

The part # you need is 964 106 015 31

I use Sunset, Pelican, or Sonnen for most new parts, you can google for more info:

Pelican:
Online pricing catalog, shows availability
Good prices for OEM stuff but usually a bit more for Porsche brand
Will ship USPS to Canada (a bit slower but cheaper, no usurious "brokerage fees")
They have a Porsche one for $622 or OEM for $575

Sonnen:
Online pricing, but no availability shown (ie qty in stock, how long before they ship)
Porsche brand only, prices very good and usually within a $ or two of Sunset
Ship Fedex only, but they are WAY cheaper than UPS
Pricing? Dunno, their website appears to be down, first time I've seen that

Sunset
Must call or email for pricing & availability
Porsche brand only, prices very good, often a hair cheaper than Sonnen
Ship UPS only, which is why I don't use them much any more. Tired of getting screwed by UPS for ridiculous "brokerage fees"
Pricing unknown, you'd have to call them

I now also use an Oregon based package forwarding service (Shipito) to save shipping costs and consolidate packages, unless I'm in a big, big hurry.

Hope this helps.

Its becoming more common as these cars all age, unfortunately. Do not buy used, as you can end up in the same or worse place again soon (see links below). You'll be buying it from the dealer or Pelican or similar. The new fan is about $450 with the fan bearing (bearing alone is about $225), so the fan is a little "cheaper" than it seems...

There is a tsb for the alternator pulley. My car did the same. I caught it in time as the alternator belt shredded. It was about to take the fan belt out next.

Ordered the updated pulleys. Check for the tsb. I will be doing this later today and will post some pics.

I was under the impression that if your original (read:non updated) pulley has made it this far, it is probably not necessary to change it. The idea being that some of them had problems since new shredding belts on a regular basis hence the new pulley and that if your "old style" pulley never had a problem in 18 years, then it's not likely to develop one now. I have the old style and no unusual belt wear but next time I do a belt change I will be inspecting it really closely when taking it apart and putting it back together.

I think these types of failures are gonna become more common as these cars age and small amounts of corrosion on the magnesium fan create significant compromises in the integrity of the assembly.

Considering the possible damage and associated costs as a result, it is an item I would never consider buying used.

A local bought a used fan hub bearing claimed to have low mileage. That ended up being a total waste of money.

I have a lot of downtime during my engine rebuild -- any process that could benefit the fan at this point? Eg bead-blast + magik coating??

Like all good 993 fans, I have chips on the blade edges from the last alternator change when it was fused to the shaft...

I think Andreas is trying to corner the used 993 fan market much the way Opo has for the entire car. Watch prices start rising into the stratosphere. Buy your futures / options contracts now while you can still afford 'em.
