Default Why not build lifetime quality DME relay?

Last week I had a random no start and I could not hear the fuel pump trying to run. Popped the hood and swapped the DME relay. Bang! started up. Put an "X" across the top of the old relay and ordered two more spares to keep in the boot now safely up front.

So why doesnt someone aftermarket or Porsche, make a d@mn relay that will last??? I'll pay $150 for one that is robust and failure proof for 20 years.

Most of the problems with the DME relay are due to cracking of weak solder joints that support the higher mass parts on the PCB. Even new relays are not necessarily better in this regard.

Alex here has nicely documented the repair which involves proper soldering of these connections. If this is done, the relay will be better than new and will not fail again.

I am still using the one that came with my car in 1996. Of course, I don't drive that much.

From what I read you can simply open the failed DME, resolder and it will last lifetime.

I'm still on the original, but have a spare and noticed that the spare part # ends with .01 (vs. 00) and wonder if perhaps it was improved.

Yes, it is a pretty easy DIY assuming you have a soldering iron and know how to solder.

I originally had bought a spare, but re-soldered the original and keep it in the trunk as a spare, either for myself, or a fellow 993 that may need it. I consider it cheap insurance...

In all honest, a re soldered DME relay probably will last a lifetime.
