you need two, one to use and one to swap in when your on the road.
Resolder both, as Steve says, then rotate and repair as needed

Auto Zone has one with lifetime warranty for $34. I went thru 2 of the super expensive ones before I found this. I posted it last year on some thread here with the part #. I forget it now because I haven't had to mess with it any more since I put the cheapy one in. Bullet proof!

Ha! You've owned it how long?

When it goes, and if you don't have a spare, once you get the car home, I'm sure they'll exchange it.

Just re-work the one you have and be done with DME relay failures.

I've owned my 964 for about 16 years. I thought it was a given to carry a spare. I know I do. The Auto Zone part has been great. I have way more fun ways to spend my money then buying over priced OEM relays, like trading my wife's MB E350 on a 997.2 and trading my Yukon XL on my GTS Cayenne. I had one OE relay that only lasted 12 months and I think it was $190 and they told me it was out of warranty!

My autozone relay went after about four months, they replaced it no issue, just a few days wait as store does not stock it.
I opened the one from Oreillys and it is of much better construction than the zone one i have...however I may have just lucked out at Oreillys..who knows I will try and post pics of the insides of them fwiw as I only have one of each ...not quite a representative sample but this isnt real science anyhow..

When they fail pop the cover off and a quick poke with a soldering iron and it's good as new. I would think of one added a wire jumper to the frame to pin solder joint inside one of these the joint and so the relay would last the life of the car.

So far of all the ones I have repaired, it was a poor solder joint each time.

The actual relay contacts were perfect and like new in each case; absolutely no pitting.

I've ordered a new DME and will faithfully carry it in the glove box from now to eternity. However, to test that the new one works, I will need to take out my currently functional DME to test the new one.

But, I would think that if your DME is working perfectly, you only risk causing problems by fiddling with it.

Does the act of removing or replacing the DME increase the risk of failure at the solder joint?

IMHO...if "fiddling" with it causes it to fail...it needs to be replaced/fixed anyway. Consider it a successful test of a part that was on the verge of failure.
