Default OT: What is so special about the TAG Monaco watch?

Hi all,

I have an opportunity to buy a newer Tag Hueur Monaco watch. Just wondering what is the hoopla about this watch. Is there anything excellent about it except that it was worn by an actor in a movie?

This is not a troll. And I don't want to pass up a good deal. Will sell Porsche parts if needed if the watch is worthwhile .

Thanks

Tags in general are pretty unremarkable and they have been a bit less the genuine about certain aspects of their movements. Some people really like the look of the monaco...I'm not really in that camp.

If you like it, and the value proposition works for you, you could buy worse watches.

Me, I would not buy it.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As far as watches go, it is a solid time piece and has its following. It has an ETA-based movement - 2892 or 2894 I think in the newer ones (although TAG calls it a "Calibre") and is very good.

Monaco has a lot of different "limited edition" versions out there. Some hold their value better than others. Fun fact: PCA had 55 Monaco watches made for their 55th anniversary a few years back.

Keep in mind, like everything mechanical, it needs to be serviced (disassemble, clean, oil, reassemble, and regulate) every few years. TAG recommends shorter intervals, but 5-6 years is usually OK. Just like a Porsche, depending on where you get it done it would run anywhere between $400-700.

Are you planning to purchase it to wear it regularly or mostly keep it in your watch box?

That is also one of the question I am asking myself. Should I get one to wear or keep it in a box.

IMHO Tags are meant to wear not collect. If you do want to collect a Tag then get a more vintage Heuer Monaco which will hold it's value better. Or look at other more prestigious brands like Patek & Rolex.

The Patek and Rolexes are blue chips, but they are too old man's watch. I do like the Speedmaster. But this Monaco was coming up at a good price. Wondering if this watch has merits or if it's just all blings for the price.

Now a 70s vintage Monaco in my price range...no doubt I would snap it up. But this is a 2013-14 model.

It costs me $85 to have my 1962 Omega Constellation serviced by a local watchmaker. I do it roughly every 3 years. $400-700 seems incredibly steep.

+1. I have an Oris TT1 that I wear daily...even when working on the car. I buy a watch to wear...not sit in a case on display. My $.02.

If you like the watch and plan to wear it I would buy it. I had a Tag for 10 years and it was a great watch and never let me down. If you are buying a watch for an investment, then there are probably better watches you could acquire. I love the look of the Monoco and could care less about the McQueen tie in.

I'm just piling on at this point, but...

+1 on buy it if you like it and intend to wear it. I like the looks of that watch, but have a 1964 Carrera Chrono and an original Porsche Design Chrono that already compete for space on my wrist.

I had to completely service my '64 with new pushers, etc. and the cost was around $300, but that was a major service.

You could check with ArchieLuxury [see youtube] - might get a better deal from him - he needs money!

$85 is very cheap. My Omega Speedmaster is about $500 for factory service. I have heard there is a shop in SF that will do it for $350-400 but never heard anywhere near $85.

Maybe not in the same league as a TAG, but I feel the same way about my 80's Concord Mariner SG.

Axl- sorry to have been lame and not address your actual question. The hoopla is just that - worn by an actor in a movie (who, I understand, gave several copies of that same watch to friends). Besides that, it's a cool car-guy watch. (but, given your interest in Porsche, I think the original Porsche Design Orfina Chrono is perhaps more cool / more collectible).
