I've had my car for a year now and kept reading scary consumption numbers (here and in the Porsche manual). My consumption is very reasonable, like 1/2pt for 2500km. I kept my oil level half full or below and reading this thread it seems it might just be the sweet spot. My guage is not that bad, indicating a little lower than on the dip stick.

The suggestion of such a need should always be suspect and the need validated by multiple persons via multiple diagnostic methods.

Not only no. Not only hell NO. Not only HELL NO. (I could continue with cruder language.)

IF you'd had your hands in maybe 2-300 of these things from 2.0-3.6, you'd know the factory guides are marginal with as little as 30K on them. I'm ready to break a 42K original mile 964 engine down in the next month or so, and how about I report back?

It's up to each individual to determine where the cost/benefit is in replacing guides, but understand what is taking heat away from the valve stem (which in turn has taken heat out of the combustion chamber).

The factory spec for oil consumption on a 993 is 1 quart per 600 miles.

I don't think so.....that seems like an awful lot.

Have you been reading John Ireland's maintenance book?

I repeat the factory spec is 1 quart per 600 miles. Well actually the factory spec is 1 litre of oil per 1,000 kms (or 621.371 miles per 0.264 gallons of oil).

Here in Canada we have been brought up with a mix of Metric and Imperial (with some US thrown in) measurement systems so that we are either totally bilingual (measurement language wise) or totally confused between the two and have no idea what we are talking about.

You're both right. It is the factory spec, and it's an unacceptably high level of oil consumption. This spec was a CYA move by Porsche.

This is not a new topic, it has been discussed here before. Personally, I've not experienced this. But, then again, I've not filled mine to the top mark before.

Not to say it doesn't happen. I've also not seen a rash of people here doing top ends.

That raises an interesting question: Have statistics been collected or poles been conducted to establish what percentage of our cars have had a top end rebuild, particularly with respect to having their valve guides replaced?

Works out to be 587 furlongs per gill, if that helps...

Closest thing to what your asking, that I'm aware of:

I was just thinking the same thing. Not sure if one of us has now volunteered? What would good mileage buckets be? I am thinking no rebuild, then a few buckets for yes and at what mileage. <50, 50-65, 66-80, 81-95, 96-105, 106-120, etc ( I think we have up to 10 buckets available for polls) or something along these lines. But not sure these buckets need to be this granular.

I can see two other polls that would answer questions frequently asked: what oil do you use and another for how much oil does your car consume.

I believe normally you are looking at 10.5 quarts for an oil change, so any idea how many quarts would be used if you were trying to get it to this level?

I went ahead and started a poll for top end rebuilds. Should be interesting. I still think there is value and the other two polls I suggested.
