Beverly Hills Porsche, and my 993
So, I don't normally use BHP for anything, but what with all the news of a big El Nino wet winter coming here to Southern California, I figured I'd get some new wiper blades, and they're close to where I live.
They're overly fake-nice over there, so after I paid $75 for my blades, I decided to ask the parts guy to have someone install them. Oh sure, I can install them, but for $75 for blades and their desire to kinda please, I thought I'd let them do it.
So, they take me over to this mechanic and ask him to install them, and the parts guy leaves. The mechanic is working on a newer 991, and he asks which car is mine. I point over to my old C4S, and he brightens and says, "ahhh, a 993"!
We walk over, and as he's admiring my car, I tell him he must get to work on lots of fantastic Porsches, like that newer 991 in his bay. He looks me dead in the eye and says, "Man, these newer 911s are pieces of crap. THIS, the 993, is not."
He installs my blades without fanfare, and I thank him.
As I fire up the 993 to leave, yet another mechanic starts waving and running toward my car. I'm thinking, uh oh, is something wrong?
The second mechanic reaches my window and says, "Hey, that's not a factory exhaust, is it? You gotta have had something done, what is it?????"
I say, "Oh, yeah, those are modified mufflers. They're made by a company called Fister....they're Fister Stage IIs"
He says, "Oh yeah, Fister....I've heard of them. Wow, do those sound good. Never sell this 993, they are the best ones, and we work on all types of Porsches here...!"
I wave and pull out of the service bay, to a few admiring glances.
I don't love Beverly Hills Porsche. But it sure sounds like their mechanics love the 993

Just today I was at a Volvo dealership having my daughter's car serviced. While I was waiting, I wandered into the showroom and was looking at a new S60T R Design.
A salesman came up and started his chatter and after a moment I said, "I think I'll just keep driving what I've got."
He said, "Well, maybe we can work a trade. What do you have?"
"A '97 993 Carrera."
"Oh, well. No question there. Of course you keep the 993," and he walked off without another word.
Even Volvo salesmen know.

I remember she died when I was a kid in the late 70s, and sure enough, they buried her in her car.
True story.

I had a similar experience there at BHP a few years ago but they effed my car up so will never go back.

I agree 100%. The sound of the door closing was the first thing that got my attention when I was given the keys and told to "go have some fun" by my sales guy.

Agreed - that sound is unique in cardom. When you have a chance, check out the door closing noise of an MB W126. My second favorite after the 993. Not the same, but beautiful just in a MB way. I'll rock a W126 again someday...

Goofball .... $75! I'll bet after you left the parts guy ran to each of those mechanics and gave them $20! And they were still left with 100% markup over cost...

Awesome story - thanks for sharing. These cars do seem to get a lot of respect. The only other car I have owned with a similar build quality and solid sound to the door closing is a Volvo 240. Talk about tanks! Those cars were extremely well built and will drive forever. I had two that exceed 250k miles and still ran great.

Yep. Dropped my daughter off at high school Wednesday. In the leaving line, a parent pulled up next to me and said "Great to see you driving it, see you frequently. Nice to see the older cars out instead of in storage." Never thought of my '95 as an "older" Porsche. Maybe the previous '88....

Good story, I hope the wrench doesn't get slammed for criticizing the product that pays his salary. I too enjoy the recognition of owning a 993. I get thumbs up from the young ones to seventy years old women at the Stop & Shop. Also, stop light offers to buy are at 4 in the past 6 months and 1 at a recent car show. Sell? not at this point, add to inventory, I hope so..
