Time to jack it up and remove the center tunnel cover and do some inspection of the shift mechanism. Then disconnect it from the tranny and see if the binding is from the linkage or the tranny itself.

Do you have a short-shift kit? Those usually require a substantial "dimple" in that center tunnel to clear the lowered linkage. If you hit a rock or anything that smacked the dimple, then shifting will be very difficult.

Do you still have your engine undertray in place? As mine did this on HOT days, after a hard run with the undertray in place, never when removed,or on cold days. It wasn`t my imagination as I would install it for winter and remove for summer for the first few years of ownership. In the end I gave it the flick altogether and it never happened again.

Not if the owner or shop performing the installation knew what they were doing as this thread clearly indicates that the shop had absolutely no clue.

All they had to do is rotate the bushings (items 26) by 180 degrees which the new owner of the car then performed. All was well then.

I did work on one car where the bushings (items 26) deteriorated to the point where it no longer located the tube (item 27) in the shifter box. That was the reason for hard shifting in that case.

I dont want to be the doom warrior

Can you shift smoothly with the engine switched off ?

when was the last time the gearbox oil was changed ?

993 gearboxes have a habit of collecting debris where the selector shafts enter box

If you are lucky an oil change will do it the world of good

If like me the diff was collapsing and the box needed a rebuild and new diff you are unlucky

Had the same thing happen with respect to the stick shift feeling like it seized up twice this week then it would go back to normal after driving for a while. It felt like I was trying to shift through very thick molasses.

Have you guys ever changed your shift bushings? These cars don't have any cables in the linkage. Pull off the tunnel cover and look at all the bushings. I have 99k on mine and just replaced all the cups and bushings a few months ago. They were in dire need and it's a pretty easy DIY.

This is an older thread that got dug up, it would be great if the OP posted to tell the tale of what actually happened it could be really helpful for others.

The entire shift mechanism from the dog teeth all the way to the shift handle is finicky and there are lots of failure points.

As far as I know these have not been done. It's going into the shop not this week but next and will update. Hoping it might be something simple such as a transmission mount.

Got it back from the shop, here's what was replaced
Shift sleeve bushing - 964 424 115 01
Shift Joint - 928 424 005 01

My mechanic said they were complete gone. Definitely has a more accurate shift now. Hopefully that was the cause.

For reference, from the picture above these are #4 and #16. #16 (and #15) can be fixed using a new 928 bushing cup: 928 116 145 03

I had the stiff shifting issue in the past. It would come and go at random times. I put the car up on my lift and had a second set of eyes (Shadow993) and discovered the shift tube guides - part #26 - were broken. The broken shift tube guides allowed the shift tube to move around.

This weekend I replaced the guides and added a golden rod. Everything is tight and precise. I hope and expect my shifting woes are over.

In the recent past, I replaced the bushing cups described in this tread. They were crumbling due to age.

See attached pics for bad part and location.
