Default 993 starter questions

Hey folks, replacing the starter on my 96 cab and have hit a roadblock. How the heck do you get the bronze bushing out of the transaxle housing?? I guess you would call it a thrust bearing or bushing... That centers the shaft of the starter while engaged.

I can see it and I can get an old VW tool that I have (from earlier air-cooled days) to lock on to it, but that tool is too short to engage the bracket and nut used to back the bushing out.

Looking online for a 911 equivalent tool and can't find a thing.

Any thoughts folks?

Thanks,
Scot

I don't know if THIS is the same tool as the one you already have, but worth a try. The Sir tool P239 is supposedly for all Porsche and VW.

Just a bump for this question. I just got my Bosch remanfactured replacement starter and it came with the bushing that according to the warning label "Must be installed into the motor housing prior to installation ..."

Shouldn't the old bushing be good enough, particularly if it is difficult get out?

Some info I found on removing and installing the starter bushing.

Disclaimer: I have not done this job so the information is not tested.

Three illustrations from a VW workshop manual:

Thanks for sharing. Now the question is if a replacement is required. Is this really a wear item?
