Default help with AC belt

Trying to get my AC up and working. It has worked ever since I've owned the car, but last year when I did some work in the engine (plugs, wires, caps, rotors, dizzy belt, VC gaskets, hydro lifters etc.) I never re-installed the AC belt. In fact, I purchased all new belts as part of that project but did not install the AC belt.

Now it is hot out and I would like to drive the thing - with AC.

I am trying to install a belt with P/N: 999.192.363.50 and it is much too short. It will install, but the compressor is all the way to the center on its guide/mounting rails and the inner/upper bracket (that bolts to the front/top of the engine) is out of adjustability so I cannot fasten it?

I got that part number from the P-Car DIY website which is generally accurate and the belt was purchased from local dealership.

Help?

thats the way it is. Every belt job I've done on a 993, from a 95, to a 98, to a turbo, has the AC compressor all the way towards the center on its adjustment bracket with the new belt. I don't even bother with the adjustment screw as the tension seems to be fine with this arrangement.

That's the correct belt, and it is a bit of a PIA. See this Pelican Technical article for more details. Good luck. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...com/vbelt2.htm

I had difficulty with this job as well, and searching the forum turned up one of Bruce7's excellent threads (https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...e-v-belts.html) with the suggestion to start with the front left compressor bolt, then go counter clockwise. This worked for me.

Thanks for the replies. I did some more digging and found that some use the 13 X 1100 Contitech (or similar), I'll have one of those tomorrow.

I used the 13x1100 Contitech. You still have to completely unbolt the compressor to install, but you can actually use the tensioner to get the right tension.

I am another satisfied user of the 1100 x 13 Contitech after struggling with the 1085's.

Just to close the loop on this, I had my FLAPS cross reference the ConiTech 13X1100 and they came up with a 13X1103 Gates belt. P/N = "9430HD".

Works like a charm, allows for the use of the tensioning bolt.

AC blows cold, road trip to Hotlanta next week for work...

Who was the manufacturer for your new too-short belt, Contitech? I had a similar problem with a Contitech belt with the same part number (999.192.363.50, 13x1085). The profile of the teeth on the Contitech were different from the old belt (Optibelt) in the same size and made the Contitech fit like a shorter belt.

I posted photos and a few measurements here: http://twofourthsfull.blogspot.com/2...belt-size.html

I had the same issue with my A/C belt. Right or wrong, I went to NAPA in LaGrange and picked up a belt and it fit just fine. It's been in service for a couple of years.

Funny, I went all the way to the Bumper to Bumper in LaGrange and bought the Gates. I doesn't say "Porsche" on it, but it spins the compressor just fine.

Resurrecting this old thread because I just went through the pain of trying to replace my existing 13mm X 1085mm Porsche AC belt (PN off 99919236350) . I was unwilling to remove all the compressor bolts in order to get the old belt off and the new one on as pointed out in the earlier posts. So I cut it off and then went looking for a longer replacement belt. After some research I was able to find the following part numbers for a new longer replacement belt that allows the belt to be slipped on without removing all the mounting bolts and also provides enough slack to use the tension adjuster bolt.

Here are the vendor part numbers for the longer 13 mm X 1100 mm or 0.53" X 43.5" Porsche 993 A/C V belt:

Porsche - 900-192-027-50 (Correct for a 1980 Porsche Carrera's A/C belt)
Contitech - 13 X 1100 or 17435 https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_In...570&DID=223687
Dayco - 17435
Gates - 9435

I don't understand this. The A/C compressor bolts are all accessible from the top. It's probably 30 seconds to do it right and use the correct belt. Simply loosen bolts and adjustment screw, put on new belt, use adjustment screw and tighten A/C bolts. This is the easiest of the 3

Steve, you’re welcome to come try put a stock belt on mine. I removed all the bolts, fitted the belt and the compressor was so tilted the the far side bolts were hanging in the breeze. The bigger gates belt solved my problem and now the adjuster works just as it does in every other car I’ve owned. You loosen it, swap belt and tighten.
there’s something behind this but I’ve no idea. Maybe some part removed for engine access goes on wrong and adds 1/2” to the distance. There seems to be 2 camps, stock belt fits and stock belt no way fits.
