95 993 running hot
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Haven't been here much the past few years, perhaps because I've only put around 8k miles on my 993 in the past three years...
Here's the issue:
Car runs/drives great with zero oil consumption (top end done at 95k miles - currently at 125k miles). When driving the car warms up as normal. The temp gauge goes over the second line mark and the oil cooler opens up and the gauge drops down to "normal" at roughly 1/2 way between the first two marks. Then the engine gradually rises to "nine o-clock" upon normal driving in warmer (north of 80F) weather, in cooler weather (45-65F) it runs "normal". Up until last summer, it always ran "normal". It runs just fine but I don't get on it for fear of heating things up too much. At normal highway speeds it runs "slightly warm", meaning right at the second oil temp marking. In the city/around town it goes to "9:00" quickly.
The oil cooler is unobstructed, the oil cooler fan works perfectly (replaced prophylactically two years ago while I was in there) and is on all the time (disconnected the thing behind the passenger headlamp). What on earth could it be? I did notice the cooling fan on the lump itself spinning freely the other day when the engine was off immediately after I shut it down. I suspect that is the "root" of the problem but what to replace/look for I have zero idea. I've done a search to no avail. All mods to the car were done long before this issue developed recently.
I appreciate your kind assistance.
Best,
Fred

So the engine cooling fan (the big one one the motor) spins freely? That would be a huge problem...
If memory serves, the hub/pulley is bolted directly to the fan, there is no way for it to slip unless the belt itself is gone.

Belt is indeed intact and quite tight I might add. I'll check the fan to see if it's spins freely when I return home in a few hours. I just found it odd to see it spinning before.

What's "normal" temp?
On a highway my oil is dead on the second mark (8 o'clock), maybe a tad above if it's hot out. That's the coldest operating temp. If I don't do fan override I'll see temp at 9 o'clock in town driving with a few stops.

There was a thread about an oil fan resistor that slowly fails like the AC fan resistor. Was that part replaced recently? I can take a pic of the part number if you want.

Perhaps a dumb question but is there one belt turning the engine fan/alt or do you see two belts?

Couple other thoughts:
Is oil level correct?
Perhaps the oil cooler could use some cleaning to be more effective?
Maybe temp sender or the gauge is the issue?
So do you have fan override? Try driving with it on.

If it gets higher than a smidge over 9:00pm, other than on the track, the ballast resistor for the oil cooler fan (which is located in the right front corner of the car, ahead of the right front wheel) probably failed. To test it, leave the car idling for 20 minutes or so in warm weather and, standing by the right front wheel, you should be able to hear the fan running and feel the breeze under the car from the fan's exhaust.
