blue smoke and ping

My car had some poor running and pinging issues. It became worse after awhile and ended up being a bad coil. I did the distributor check early on and it ran on both distributors, but after awhile the primary coil turned out to be bad. It was starting to fail.
Car ran slightly better on one distributor than the other before it completely failed. Just a thought.

Oil smoke along with the ping?

Engine developed ping and some blue smoke at part throttle while in stop and go traffic.
Then large puff of blue smoke on start after sitting for a few hours.
Ran just fine and didn't smoke after that.
A couple thousand miles/months ago it puffed a little blue smoke on startup several times, hot or cold.
98k miles, 1 qt/1500 miles.
Broken ring, other thoughts?

Indie checked oil level said it was low, not reading on dipstick.
Gauge also indicated low.
Changed oil and both filters, refilled with 10 quarts.
Soooooo......other than overfilling, any ideas?

Normal is blowing smoke. Occasionally. I never blow smoke unless I'm at the track. when that hole a it's due to the aos nod comes out of both sides equally.

Sorry, I typed it up on my iPhone while walking....
What I meant to say was...
Normal is blowing smoke occasionally. I've only had it once or twice under normal conditions and both times the car sat for a few weeks. I occasionally get to at the track when I've overwhelmed the AOS and when this happens, smoke comes out of both sides equally.

993's don't have an AOS.
Temporary pinging could be due to a bad batch of gas. But given your oil consumption, it's more likely you have enough carbon buildup on the piston tops that the compression ratio is raised, creating pinging in certain conditions. It may be the case that your oil consumption has gotten a lot worse lately. 993 cats will absorb all but the worst oil smoke on a warmed-up engine. If you're seeing blue smoke anytime but cold startup, and more than a brief puff or burn-off, you've got a problem. Would bet on it being time for valve guides.
