993 market values - up/down/sideways?
Greetings from Canada.
The other day a chap followed me and once in the parking lot he approached to say he's collecting 993s. He currently has a 993 Turbo and asked if I'd be willing to sell mine. I've got a 97 993 C2 Targa which I've owned since 2002 (second owner). It has 72K miles, dark blue (not sure on the official color designation, I've seen midnight blue, ocean blue, pearl blue). It's not in showroom shape, but I take care of it. Anyways, I still love the car and I'm not really looking to sell it, but if the price is right, well, maybe I'd go get a 997 Targa. (I do love the glass Targa roof) Then again the shop foreman at the Porsche dealership told me not long ago I'd regret it if I ever sold my 993.
The market for 993s in the US seems to be all over the place. I was surprised by the price of this one but others have said the market is soft. Any ideas on average prices in the US? (Mine is originally a US-California car) Is 50-55K USD the right ballpark? Of course the market here in Canada (and Canadian dollar) are different and would mean a different price but I'm just trying to get a rough idea.
Oh and if anyone else thinks I shouldn't sell it, please speak up!
Thanks!

Don't know about the US values but here in Australia they are on the way up. I recently had my 993 in a workshop in Brisbane and was asked by the owner what I had it insured for. I told him I had an agreed value of $85K, he said to double it. After hearing that I did a bit of research on the web checking values and he was correct, it's difficult to find a 993 under $100K.

I think it is 40-50 US. Have you done the top end yet? Full service history? original paint?
The market has been dropping since the spring and now fall is around the corner. The newer targa will be stiffer and less rattles than your targa built on the convertible chassis.

A top end hasn't been done, the guys at the dealership said it is "sweating" a bit, but that it is normal, oil consumption is normal, and things look good for now.
I've got full service history, and it is original paint.

full service history and original paint is really good. no top end, guys will want to deduct 10k for the top end they say will need doing soon. I sold a coupe in spring and that is what many said to me.
I had a 993 turbo and switched to 996 turbo, and other than values the newer car is better in every way. the 997 is much faster and more creature comforts than 993. 993 is classic but old. I say offer the car to the guy at 60 CDN and get a 997.

From a quick google search
Luxury vehicle: You wish to bring in a car valued at $70,000 by Australian Customs.
Duty = 10% of 70,000 = $7,000
GST is calculated on $77,000 (value + duty) = $7,700
Total value of car subject to LCT = $70,000 (value) + $7,000 (Duty) + $7,700 (GST) = $84,700
Luxury Car Tax payable on: $84,700 (Total value) - $57,466 (Allowance) = $27,234.
Luxury Car Tax is 33% of $27,234 = $8,987.
So, your total charges are: $7,000 (Duty) + $7,700 (GST) + $8,987 (LCT) = $23,687.
Summary for Luxury Vehicle Import Fees:
Value = $70,000
Duty = $7,000
GST=$7,7000
LCT = $8,987
Total Cost to Import = $23,687 AUD
SO - a $52 613.05 USD car would cost an additional $17 803.98 USD to import into Australia. Then you need to ship it, insure it, get it inspected by customs & cleaned by the quarantine service, convert it to RHD (unless it's >30yo), get it inspected for roadworthy and pay for any modifications to meet Australian standards.
Then when you want to register it in my state, you pay 3% for stamp duty (once only) and another ~$800 AUD for registration and compulsory third party injury insurance. Plus whatever car insurance you choose.
As an icing on the cake - buyers will be afraid of it because it's not Australian delivered.
#$@! I had no idea it was so expensive. I'm SO glad I didn't have to go through that for my car.
