It really comes down to what's most important to YOU. Being the big dawg at the track will require a better weapon IMHO. I don't think you'll get there with more HP and the 993. Wait for the new 991 manual GT3 to arrive and buy one of the autos for a discount. Add back seats and be done with it.

I thinks Steve's point was to avoid the early DFI's, I guess the reasoning being all the kinks will have been worked out after a few years?

I agree with MarinS4 - If you must be the fastest guy on the track you need a different platform. Adding power to a stock body 993 won't do it.

See Steve's comment above about going with a '12- DFI?

I don't have delusions of grandeur in that I think I'm the next Kimi or Schumi. I can lower my lap times by getting better, better tires, etc.

But I won't be fast like some of the new cars. So the only real options for me are
1) STFU. Lucky bastard as it is, compared to most of the planet. Work via coaches and data to find a couple seconds and leave a couple seconds as a safety cushion.
2) Do something to the 993 and go faster, plus above coach and data. Potentials here are fodder for a different thread.
3) Switch to 997 platform (991 too $$ and dislike 996).

So what I learned here is basically:

1) Look at 2011, ideally 2012, GTS prob first choice then Turbo or S. Love the GT3 but can't be only car.

2) On paper it is a no brainer and there are no OMG I hate it you feel disconnected or the ejector seat keeps going off or whatever gotchas. The 997 anything wins on paper with no meaningful caveats in the .2 iteration.

3) Emotion factors in for some and not for others.

4) Drive 997 after the thaw and see which emotions win.

5) No actual bad or stupid choices if made with eyes open. If I put $30k into the 993 I might not get all out of ever sell but will smile. If mod the 997 it might keep depreciating and might not get all out of it if I ever sell but will also smile.

Thx.

Smile Just experienced the 991 again...

The owner let me take it our for a second time. With him in the cabin, and noting we were on an empty private airport access road, he told me to put it in the Sport + mode (The most aggressive mode), and floor it. Good God what a rush....the car explodes off the line, rear ends gets a little twitchy as the PDK shifts to a longer gear....I took it up to about 90 mph, and backed off...didn't want to take any more risks with his car. Took my pal home and drove the car from Paso Robles to San Luis Obispo and back (70 miles roundtrip)....the car is as mellow OR outrageous as you want it to be, and it has luggage space in front and rear passenger seats for little people....and if a heavy traffic occasion presented itself, the PDK does a great job.

If I went this way, I'd still keep my 97 Carrera...so olde school.

And finally, given the performance of the 991 3.4 with 350 HP, I hesitate to think about the performance of the 991 Carrera S with 400 HP.

We have an 09 C2S that would make an excellent dual purpose car.
  • Great balance
  • Plenty of power
  • Its a PDK, I'd recommend getting a 3 pedal car
  • It will likely take a bit more care and feeding than a Mezger based engine, but lottsa recommended upgrade info out there on the inet.
Likely any 09 - 12 C2S would suit your needs, a GTS would be cool if you can find one.

Have fun

Craig
