Talking Windscreen Squeak

Just to report that I installed the rubber rope today. Took about 40 minutes and it works!! Did about 60 miles and no squeaks. I hope it lasts!

The rope is available at Schacht Motorsport.

Thanks to the Board for this invaluable fix which the dealer was not aware of!

Cool

Yes, the rope really works! I installed mine two years ago, and haven't heard one squeek since!

Gotta love those simple solutions!

My squeek is driving me nuts & the things I've tried thus far haven't cured it.
My understanding is that you don't remove the windshield to install the rope - is that correct? Do you squeeze it in from the inside or outside of the car? What kind of tool did you use?
Thanks much.

Rick, you gotta do the rope! You'll be amazed at the difference.

It's very easy. I just followed the instructions that came with the rope. You don't need to take off the rubber seal from the windshield. You lift the seal clear from the bodywork and you'll see a gap between the bodywork and the windshield. The rope fits in the gap. We all talk about the being a "rope", by the way, but it's really a rope-like piece of rubber/silicone, about 6mm in diameter.

First wet the outer seal with a damp sponge. Then just lift it off with your finder or a plastic baby knife. Spray some 3M wet silicone into the gap and then start to push the rope, with the little knife, into the gap. Do this all the way along, feeding the rope into the gap and pushing it in with the little plastic knife. I also used my wife's orange stick, (little rubber headed gadget used to push back nail cuticles) to help get the rope in the gap. (Key advice: make sure wife has more orange sticks and don't take the last one!!!).

Using the plastic knife and orange stick and going carefully means there's no risk of damaging the paintwork.

If you buy the rope from Schacht they will sell you the 3M silicone although I think that has to be pretty freely available.

The gap around my windshield was not the same all the way around, so, in some places I was able to double the rope (i.e. stuff in two pieces) in other places the gap was very narrow and I could only get one piece in. I just made sure the outer seal was flush with the bodywork, as it was before I started. The instructions, which are for a 996 fix, indicate to put the rope in the gap at the top and at the sides and are unclear about fitting in along the bottom where the shield meats the scuttle. I fitted it all the way round (i.e. on all four sides).

40 minutes, sorted! As I said, a great and simple fix. I hope it lasts as I think I read somewhere on the board that some folks have had the squeak return but that it can be re-calmed by spraying again with silicone.

Hope this helps! Go for it!!

Rick, sorry. On your two specific questions, to make sure it's absolutely clear.

1) I did not remove the outer seal or the winshield.

2) The rope into the gap is inserted from the outside.

Have a quick look by just lifting the outer deal with your fingernail and you will understand.

Rick, me again.

You can just pry the edge of the outer seal up with your fingernail and pull it gently back. This will allow you to see the gap between the bodywork and the winshield. Don't yank it as you'll pull the front seal off. I've seen others recommend taking the outer seal off altogether. I don't hink that's necessary to do this job sucessfully. You just lift the deal with one hand, helped with the little knife, and feed the rope into the gap, all the way along, with your other hand.

I'd give my right hand to be ambidextrous !!

Marco,
Thanks for all this information. I just got the rope, but it did not come with instructions. One thing I want to be clear on, though. I’ve lubed the seal before, and have gotten temporary results. I’ve always lifted the glass side of the seal, and sprayed silicone from that side. There doesn’t seem like there’s much room on the glass side for the rope. Are you saying lift the body side of the seal and stuff the rope on that side? Any other hints to someone who did not get the instructions?

Thanks again,
Tom

Tom, yes, absolutely. Lift the body side of the seal and you'll see what I mean. This is clear in the Porsche tech bulletin that I got from Schacht.

If you have a fax number, send it to me and I'll fax you a copy of the instructions.

Tips are on the previous post, but I'd just re-emphasise putting in two strands of rope (which the insructions specify) but that that's not possible in places where the gap is tight. Looks like the shield is not bonded absolutely squarely on the bodywork when it's fitted. That causes the gap to be a little less in places and a little more elsewhere.

Guys,

I can't seem to find the contact information for Schacht Motorsport on the web. Would one of you please provide it? Thanks!

Yep, 996 541 903 00

Yes, it's a 996 part number. This rope was developed for 996's.

Marco, I e-mailed my FAX number privately. Did you get it?

FYI,

I was able to quiet the squeak with that "Pedro's ice wax". First time when I did it, it just quieted it down, but not totally. Next time I applied it better, I lifted the seal and sprayed the 'wax' where the 'rope' would go. Now it's dead quiet!

Although I also installed Fabspeed supercups (w/out the baffles), maybe that has something to do with it also...

Seriously, the wax also takes care of the problem totally, I was thinking of installing the rope, but I'll see how long this lasts (although applying the wax takes about 5 min. so it's easy to add if needed.

Can you provide information on how/where to get Pedro's ice wax? Do you know if it is more or less intrusive than the silicone rope solution?

After many years of ownership my windshield has started creaking over the last couple of months and it is driving me nuts. Between the ice wax and the silicone rope I want to resolve it ASAP.
