New purchase
Hello to the board,
Currently own a 2004 996turbo..want a change, came across a 1996 low mileage (30,000) c2 cab white/chestnut. 6speed Has lsd.. Car is in excellent condition with essentially all service records. Asking 67,000.
I had owned a c2 tip in the past, but don't remember all of its issues.
Would appreciate some input about things that I should look out for.
I know that the aircooled have come down in price, but am curious to know what every feels on long term price stability,
In advance
Thanks for all your input
Peter

Prices have pulled back slightly this winter; who really knows where the market willl be in 5-10 years. Sounds like a nice example and probably $10k over market. Buy it to enjoy it...don't worry about the "investment" potential.

Saw this car too. It's local to me, being sold by a dealer which explains the price. . Happy to check it out if you'd like. Love the color combo. The ad mentioned it's in need of a new top. I don't believe those are cheap.

Look under the front trunk, aka 'frunk', for the factory options sticker. There are Forum posts here on decoding those data.
Ask seller what other after-market mods are present, and have good PPI or knowledgeable other tell you such.
Price is high, probably 10k as noted. New top is several thousands. Low mileage is good. Cabs cheaper to buy than coupes, even though were pricier to purchase new. "S" designation higher in price, hold that added value, were not available in cabs.
Private party sales are around. Check them out, even if distant. Can often get local 993 person there via Forum to then check it , may save thousands.

There's a ton of info out here on this topic. a couple common issues are as follows:
Air wall cracked/missing
Horn Basket grommets worn so the horn goes off all the time
Door seals
Sunroof seals
Leaky Steering rack
Rear Main Seal leak ( see oil on the case halves- that's probably the RMS)
Motor mounts
There's a theme here- it's the wear parts- even a 30K example has been sitting around for 20 years and things will wear- especially the rubber parts.
There are may others I am sure and obviously a leakdown/compression check is in order.
Have fun- these are awesome cars when sorted out.

I would add suspension refresh to the list. Shocks
PRSWILL is correct. Plenty of literature on the web. Google is your friend and the Rennlist search function.
Thats how I was able to quickly get up to speed on my 993 purchase.
The search is half the fun!

So for example, a C2 Cab with 30k miles, LSD, and a fairly rare interior color (Chestnut) with full service history like you're considering is likely going to command a higher price than a C2 Coupe with 50k miles, non-LSD, and incomplete service history. The dealer has priced it high to leave room on the bone for negotiation and profit for sure.
This is wrong. I just put a new top on mine a couple of months ago. Going with a German Happich top (OEM) is about $1000. Adding the headliner is another $385 or so. Having the top installed by a reputable shop will run another $1000-$1300 or so. You will want to budget around $2500 for a new OEM top installed by a good shop. Don't skimp here. And put a Chestnut top on it!
Good luck...sounds like it could be a great car if it checks out...

He's not correct that cabs are cheaper than coupes.
[edited for brevity]

You cannot compare a highly optioned cab with a higher mileage, lower-optioned, poorer documented coupe to support your position. That's called cherry picking.
