Default Removing C2S gear shift **** from boot to repair or replace.

Hopefully I'll find something I can help out with soon, but in the meantime, another question:

Does anyone know the procedure for removing the gear **** from the boot itself in a C2S; specifically the style pictured (toward the bottom of the page; easy to find) in this other thread?

https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...e-request.html

I'd like to blast and anodize the aluminum portion, and polish the pattern legend section on top. Can't do that without removing it from the leather, though. I haven't pulled the assembly out just yet.

Kind of wanted to hear how the upholstery is held in place before I give myself a black eye yanking it all off of there to see.

C2S are plastic crap, Tequipment are alloy, what do you have?

Here's a shot of it. I believe it's Tequipment, or at least looks like it. No carbon or anything, so maybe not. It's leather all the way up to the middle of the ball or so, at an angle.

I'll be looking at it again shortly.

That's correct, as far as I know it can't be separated.

It looks similar to the wood shifter I have. If it is like the wood one, the shift pattern can be pried off with a small screwdriver, or a plastic prying device so you don't scratch it. Then there is a couple screws holding the ball to the shifter.

Two good suggestions here.

I shall thus carefully attempt to remove that cap; under the assumption that it isn't possible. That's a good compromise.

Anyone else with an idea, feel free to chime in.

Wonderful!

I'll carefully see if mine comes apart like that. It might be slightly different, given the leather, or they may have had to seal it harder. We shall see.

To be clear, is the shift pattern piece simply glued in place, or does it slip in/interact with the **** as a hole? My removal attempt method will change depending upon how it's held on there.

Two more questions: Are the two pieces of the **** metal, and if so, do they both appear to be aluminum, or is it a combination? If you don't think it's aluminum, what does it appear to be?

That could give me a leg up with planning.

Mine was kind of a press fit. But you can see 2 yellowish blobs inside. That was some kind of glue, but long ago hardened & not really doing anything.

Edit: I'm remembering I had my shifter - boot and all out of the car. The shifter is hollow & I pushed a straightened coat hanger up inside & tapped the shift pattern out.

It is glued into place. Some are stuck on better than others.

Once the boot has been released from the bottom clip and retaining groove, the whole (not hole) assembly can be pulled off the rectangular shift shaft. When doing this, I used two long screwdrivers side by side, pulling up under the shift ****. Careful not to smack yourself when the shift **** cmes off.

Not certain if the ball portion is actually alum. because it looks painted to me. If magnetic, its not alum. Same goes for the cap.

Im always careful when removing the cap from the underside; you dont want to create a pimple on the top side of the cap, from the underside.

Ok, I guess there are different ones made, as mine is a solid piece of metal, about 1/4" thick.

FWIW-I had mine bead blasted to OEM look when finished. Then re-painted the shift pattern. I did glue the center back into the outer and then glued the outer to the wood.
