What do you mean by "same shift speed points"?

Does your clutch pedal release all the way every time? I would be 90% of a $2 bill...

I shift thru the gears till I reach 6th, engage the cruise control stalk and sometimes it engages and sometimes it does not, I cannot establish a pattern on when it doesn't work. I'm thinking the clutch returns all the way out

The electrical switch in the steering column stalk. Is the stalk cluster in your car the original one? Could the grease be dried out causing the switch to not cycle? Can you consider shooting a small amount of CRC electric motor / electronic cleaner using the can's tube extender into the stalk switch housing, in place, free things up if this is the case?

Just some thoughts especially since you describe intermittent engagement.

Mine will occasionally not work - no idea why, but it always comes back. It's failed maybe 3-5 times in 10 years. When it doesn't work, it won't work at all during that drive. Next time I take the car, it seems to work fine.

Don't be thinking Stick your left toe under it and pull. If it pops out, that would explain your cruise control issues. The earlier clutch assemblies had this issue.

How you get to 6th (or any other) gear is irrelevant for cruise control, BTW.

This^^^^^
If my car has sat for a while the clutch pedal doesn't always come up fully and if I give it a little pull my left foot it moves up the rest of the way.
It's worth checking to see if that's the cause, especially when you say it works intermittently.

^ I'll offer the third confirmation of this issue with the clutch pedal not fully returning. I too find it pretty much only happens when the car hasn't been driven for a while.

The Cruise Control either works, or it doesn't, has been my experience. If it fails, even after the old using the left foot to fully release the clutch pedal, you may have a fuse/relay failure.

Mine has done that a few times.
Try turning the ignition off and on quickly (yes, even at speed, with foot off the gas, and in suitably light traffic)....restores it for my car.

I shall pursue the CRC cleaner in the stalk switch and use my foot to fully retract the clutch pedal during my next drive since I have a very early model 993 and all the parts still appear original. Most appreciative of all responses as I did not think my first question in the 993 forum would be of any particular interest

Any chance you're running with LED lights without a smart ballast?

There are other culprits. Most common, after the pedal, would be the clutch switch and brake switch, both of which can be intermittent. Intermittent cruise switch is another possibility. But going from most common (and free) to more elaborate and expensive is the engineering way to solve problems.
