I just did a complete engine rebuild including splitting the case, and as long as my car was gonna be gone for a few months and I was in deep, I told my mechanic to go ahead and replace any and all seals, bushings or any wear items he could find that needed to be replaced. That decision made my car mechanically as new when the job was done, but added substantially to my final bill.
Oh yeah...those make sense. I would also take care of other low cost things that pays BIG dividend in the end on looks.

- powdercoat the engine tins. Cheap and make the engine bay looks good.
- possibly powdercoat the fan & hub. DO NOT spray paint them!!
- replace the engine sound pad and/or engine compartment seal
- clean the heat exchangers while they're out
- clean the engine bay while the engine is out
- clean the transmission while it's out
- replace clutch. Lightweight flywheel if you like the noise.

These things don't cost much and will make you smile every time you pop that rear hatch.
