Did my first oil change on my 993 Turbo since purchase. I found a small skinny spring either on the mag plug for the crankcase or it was trapped in the threads. Maybe a helicoil? It looks like it could also be a garter spring from something like a crankcase seal/cam seal etc... Anyone know what this is?

993 Turbo, 81,000 miles. Car had a top end rebuild about 25K miles ago. It doesnt burn oil or make smoke. It does not have any significant leaks but does appear to be seeping a small amount of oil. Maybe 1 drop on the garage floor a week.





Additionally found some copper in the oil and filters. Possible this debris gouged the bearings.

Looks like the lips seal spring in the crankshaft rear main seal

Thanks, looks like the motor sucked in an oil seal. I am going to get the car looked at this week.

To close this thread, it looks like the spring was from a valve guide seal that was stretched/chewed up as it travelled through the motor. The valve guide failed/broke and the engine is being rebuilt as a result of debris contaminating the oil.

yikes, sorry to hear that. Were those replaced with the rebuild 25K ago??

It looks like the previous rebuild was only partially completed. It looks like the shop tried to sleeve one of the valve guides vice replacing it. It lasted for a while but the sleeving process most likely compromised the integrity of the valve guide which eventually cracked into pieces. It appears the previous engine builder must have known that something wasnt right and ended up not doing anything else with the other heads. So it was just this one valve guide that failed and the others just had 81K miles of wear on them. Is what it is.

Tensioning spring for an Oil seal Lip, Probably Rear main if it made it to the sump, Can Plugs dont have them, Could be the other end of the Crank as well

Didnt read the copper bit, but that is only present in 2 places in a Porsche. Wiring, and Babbitt material for bearings, not a good sign.

It was a valve guide seal off of a broken valve guide that failed and went through the motor
