A few months ago I found myself in the position of wanting to change my car for a 996 or modify the 993.
A month or so of mental torture and sleepless nights ensued, I finally made the decision to keep my car and inject some dianabol into the proceedings. I made my decision to keep my car since I would not find a 996 as unique as my 993, and although the 996 is dynamically a better car I think it’s more refined nature might not give me the same thrills on weekend blasts as the older car (I only use the banana for fun). The next step (and 2 months more mental anguish) was to decide who to use for the upgrade work. This is where things got really tough for me. In the end I have gone with an RS Tuning kit, which should produce 520hp / 700 NM. The engine is having a rebuild and the upgraded components fitted at Tech 9 in Liverpool, then the engine only is been shipped in a crate to RS Tuning in Germany for mapping on their engine dyno. For the sad people (like me), the actual rebuild and upgrade work consists of: Rebuild work: New big end/main/thrust/inter bearings set New piston rings New tappets Top end refresh and recon cylinder heads New HT leads New distributor cap New diverter valves New intercooler hoses Replace rear diff plates (with GT3 sintered items) General check and fettle of suspension bushes, drop links, etc Upgrade bits: Carillo rods RS Tuning flame rings Gas flow and port cylinder heads Sport camshafts and vernier conversion 5 bar fuel pressure regulator Upgraded oil cooler K24 RS ZC turbos (more on these below) Cargraphic 2.5 inch race muffler set Cargraphic 2.5 inch 100 cell cats Uprated clutch and LW flywheel BMC airfilter ECU remap Other stuff: Sports steering wheel GT2 front anti roll bar conversion R600 brake fluid PFC 97 brake pads New trousers and portable commode under driver’s seat The turbos themselves are very interesting, they are K24 RS units that have been rebuilt by Kevin, and feature his ZC technology and other modifications. To say I am excited is an understatement Kind Regards Martyn.

Congrats and good luck! You didn't mention anything about the ECU upgrade, and you won't get more power unless you upgrade the firmware, so I assume you will be doing that - who is going to change the programming? What are you going to set it to? How much max boost are you going to dial in?

![]() Congrats on the upgrade, you will have one heck of a car when it is done. It will be interesting to see how the "Zero clearanced" K24s perform vs. the standard benchmark that RS has on their own turbos, as they will map the engine with the turbos. I foresee faster spooling and amazing performance off the line! BTW, I heard some guys have gone 2WD...but maybe just rumors

Congrats MOD - it is going to be awesome
I think you should post a pic of the bannana, as most people won't have seen it, and it is pretty special. Peter S I guess you didn't you read the post ? MOD won't be getting any boost "dialled in", it is going for mapping on the same engine dyno, by the same people who do motors for many successful Euro racers. This will be a fully Motronic controlled motor - just like Porsche designed it only better

Jean, I will fill you in with full details of my late evening and early morning virtuoso exploits with the banana if you wish?
I am (and I bet Kevin is too) very interested to see how the ZC blowers perform. Yes, one particular chap has gone 2WD prior to the worst winter in the UK for 40 years TB, will post a picture. Thanks MOD.

Martyn,
Could you explain the procedure of ZC with RS-tuning? Did you get used K24RS and Kevin rebuild them? Has it been difficult to convince RS to use those turbos? I remember TB posting that RS liked the ZC-concept but not the K16s. Quote:

I saw Martyn's car at Tech 9 last week (about 30 feet from Toby's car, tb993tt).
The rear suspension seemed a little high ![]() ![]() I also have to say a huge thank you at this point to Martyn as my car is right now in the shop receiving the banana's recon'd turbos, techart 100 cells, and techart sports boxes. All i need now is some fresh ECU programming... |
