Excellence's 'Turbo Cab' feature: "The 993 Porsche never offered in the U.S." (#206)
[Cross-post from 993 Forum]
I LUV Excellence magazine. They have a good thing going. If they'd just let a 993 dominate a cover again (IIRC, >10 years ago - #104) they'd have a great thing ... I could be a bit biased, though .
In the meantime, they have a terrific trend of featuring exotic open-air 993s:
a RLer's wide-body cab, my WB Speedster, & now ... a WB Turbo Cab!
Even better: all three features were photographed & written by RLer zMayne
Behold his blog's beauty:

Excellence issue #206 goes on sale November 13
Sneak peak part 1 of 2:
WHEN JOHN MERVIN BOUGHT HIS 1995 CARRERA 4 CABRIOLET, it was a good secondhand buy, a 993 that just needed a little sorting to make into a truly great car.
“It was a little neglected and needed some freshening up,” says Mervin, who pauses before he makes an admission: “I just took that a little too far.”

Sneak peak part 2 of 2:
How far did the Berkeley, California resident go? The car now does a pretty convincing impersonation of a 993 Turbo Cabriolet, a model Porsche never offered.
In fact, prior to the 996-based Turbo Cabriolet that the company launched in 2004, Porsche officially had only offered a 911 Turbo Cabriolet from 1987 to 1989.

Zach goes on to mention that Chris Carroll's TurboKraft performed the Turbo transformation.
TurboKraft had a previous 993 featured by Excellence, "The Sleeper," a turbo-charged narrow-body with hidden intercoolers and no Turbo tail.
I met Chris when he parked it next to my 993, 'Speedy,' at a Dana Point, CA, Concours d'Elegance.
He took many photos of Speedy, saying he loved the curves ... but was smart enough to mention how much more stealthy fun she'd be with a hidden turbo transplant
Would you like this Midnight Blue Turbo Cab any better with a subtle, stock C2S/C4S spoiler?
[Related: RLer Raptor's "Air:water intercooler" & zschicago's "turbo motor in my cab" threads.]

I found this on the net (by PorschePHD) :
"Porsche built 14 special customer ordered 993 Turbo cabs with the powerplant from the 964 Turbo 3.6. These 14 993T convertibles were run through as a "skunk works" project. This was done for the largest Porsche dealer in Germany. Now the interesting part was the new President of Porsche, Dr. Wendelin was supposedly kept in the dark about it. He knew nothing of the project. During this same time period, Porsche built 1 993 Turbo S during the 1996 run. This car carried a build date of Oct 1995 along with a run of cars for the US market. This car has a US serial # and was built using 993 GT2 engine/transmission/suspension components by the same "skunk works" group that built the 14 or so convertible TT's. I have seen a handful of the 993 Cab 3.6 single turbo cars for sale and they are normally pretty reasonable because most have no idea what they are and assume they are Fauxs and converted. They are real as decoded from the serial numbers.Their final destinations are basically unknown. There are at least 2 in Germany and 2 in France. A collector in England may have the one or more that were purchased by the Sultan of Brunei who also purchased 12 959s which have never been driven and are still in storage in England.
Also FWIW there were about 10 cars sent to Andial without VIN and modified as an S2 Turbo. These were all verified and built by Andial then sold as new."

I have to agree with this...
back in my 944/951 days its was generally frowned upon to "turbo an N/A". i guess because this particular car was so extensively done it got a full spread in excellence and a thumbs up (?). i was scratching my head as well.
That said, i'll never argue with 993 content, regardless of whats been done to them, but i just didnt get why the owner took this route... there was another path to a more authentic (def cheaper too!) 'cab turbo' no doubt, but to each his own.
