Default Question about HP

How can I get a 100 HP out of a 97 993 turbo without going into the engine? Is this possible.

I think it is possible, but you'd have to use bigger turbos. They can generate the power you want, but it will be up at the top end, and you'll have less mid-range torque. You'll also need an aggressive ECU tune and sport cats. Don't forget an additional oil cooler for longevity. The Ruf Turbo R generates that power with only slightly larger turbos, but they also use sport cams. Does changing camshafts count as "going into the engine"?

Turbos, ecu, injectors, fuel pressure regulator, headers back exhaust. Done.

Easy: remove 4 and 1/2 spark plugs. Voila 100 HP.
I know: I'm going straight to my room.

^^^^ As I smile I see, getting the power "out" literally. Oh boy. This forum is so much more humorous than over in the 996tt and 997tt forums. I guess it comes with the type of personalities that own these cars. I dig.

I am always apprehensive when these motors are jacked to 475+ HP without any internal work being done, but I have not seen any longevity numbers for the bottom end/bearings/con rods/wrist bearings/pistons/head seals, so maybe its' just the engineer in me. We have seen a few high mileage examples that are stock and may have needed just valve guides, but how many examples of really boosted cars with higher miles?

Cheers,

Mike

Rufus (Ruf Turbo R: 490+ HP) was a totally fresh build (NEW heads, bearings, pumps, chains, etc) at ~86,000 miles about 8 years ago. Now has ~133,000 miles. Flawless. But that may be close to the limit without using better rods and better head sealing. A 3.8 liter build probably aggravates this with the extra torque and weight of the pistons. BTW, the Turbo R uses a stock intercooler and stock injectors.

I think tb993tt bent factory conrods in one of his earliest 3.8 twin plug variants and the engine has been refreshed once or twice more since. It must surely be a function of the usage profile - semi-legal North American road use will be easy on the engine while track or sustained high-speed autobahn use lifes the cylinder to head seals and the heads themselves.

There's been a couple/few of the high hp builds on rennlist that see track time requiring multiple engine rebuilds/tear downs for head sealing etc. I think usage makes a big difference. I keep my foot floored trying to keep up with well driven newer cars a good 1/4 of the time on the track, occ hitting the rev limit for 30 mins to an hour track session - totally different from brisk street driving.

Yes, but this is the type of driving that makes it worth the build ... and the rebuild.

Better make certain that you have good enough fuel to support a 100 BHP bump.

Detonation lifts heads and more,....

Move to Houston. We've got good fuel. Plus our cars don't have to hibernate. Then you could enjoy the extra 100 hp all year long.

But then you would have to live in Houston. In the summer.

cheers,

Mike
