But isn't the whole trouble with these things is possibly peeling the paint off while trying to get them off??

As for taking the old ones off.....that an old wive's tale. If you have factory paint, it won't peel off. You will need a clothes steamer to peel though. Otherwise, you will leave a lot of glue residue that is a pain to take off. In any case, be prepared with some adhesive remover, a steamer, and a strong set of hands to pull!
