Just finished installing my RS motor mounts in my TT.
The only problem with our cars is that the engine carrier is a bit taller than the NA cars, so the normal bolt specified on Robin's DIY is not long enough. The correct bolt is a 12mm, 1.5 pitch, GR 10.9, 120mm length bolt. The original bolt in the DIY was a 105mm length, GR 8.8 bolt. The extra 15 mm length leaves about 10mm of threading past the nut when fully assembled and torqued. I didn't have time to test out the car yet, since there are a few other things I want to change "while i'm in there", but I'll post my impressions when I get the car back together. I got the bolts from a place called http://www.metricspecialties.com/ They had great service and prices as well. Although they usually have a small minimum order. I had to order 6 bolts. So I have 4 extra bolts, so if somebody needs a pair, let me know. Rennlist members only please... Locals preferred over having to ship. Here are some pics: Differences in length of the main bolt. Click for a larger pic... More differences in length. You can see in the old bolt ( top ) where it was too short and I stripped it. DOH! Click for a larger pic... Picture of the old motor mounts. For some strange reason the right one was pretty rusty... Click for a larger pic... Installed on the right hand side Click for a larger pic... Jeff,
I got a very slightly used set of RS mounts from a fellow Rennlister. They came out of his NA car, and will be installed in my turbo. I think I will need those longer bolts. I know you didn't want to ship them, but please, please, please. Contact me directly at DOHC4v@aol.com, and I'll shoot you a check or paypal or whatever works for you. How miserable a DIY job is this for a doofus on a turbo (remember, I think of putting air in the tires as a DIY job!). Thanks,

Jeff,
This may be a stupid question, but what advantage do the RS engine mounts provide ? Thxs - james |

James, check out the archives in the 993 board. There's tons of info on the RS motor mounts...
To summarize, it gives you a more solid connection to the motor and the frame of the car. Differences ( good or bad, depending on prefernce ): a) more solid feel, less squirming during heavy cornering, may affect throttle steering b) better shifting, possibly due to less engine movement c) more engine noise and vibration The original ones are a mix of hydraylic fluid and rubber. As with any rubber piece they probably wear out after a while. The RS ones have less rubber and more metal. One step further would be solid metal mounts. |

Jeff, thxs for the insight.
Sheesh... one more upgrade too consider. This one I might do when I have the clutch re-done in the new year (LWF etc...)at the same time I thought it would be worthwhile having the diverter valves changed for billet units - and now RS mounts would make sense at the same time. - james |

cool. Hey Jeff didn't you also do the rs single belt? what are the benefits of that other than the obvious and how intensive is it etc? Neat mod that I am thinking about. I thought about the rs mounts too after checking various how to's but dunno, you will definitly have to give a feel o meter of how it compares and if it is irritating for every day or at least how much so. thanks Sean

RS Pulley is pretty easy to install. Looks good when it is done with only the single belt.

Here are my driving impressions after going to work today.
Around town: Slightly more vibration, slightly more noise. It's really hardly noticable. Shifting into first is much improved for some reason. On the highway: There's increased vibration/noise, but it adds to the driving experience, imho. The car feels much more solid, especially over bumps in the road. It almost feels like the car's suspension has been upgraded, which I know sounds weird. Feels like the car wiggles much less. I think the RS mounts with the pss-9's, this will be an awesome combination. Conclusion: I like this upgrade. I think it's a good balance between making the car more solid and adding only slightly to the noise/vibration. I think that solid mounts would be too much for me, personally. |

Cost is about 245 euro, longer bolts cost about $5 each.
Time to install is about 2 hours, if you are doing it the first time. <1 hour if you've done it before. Here's the link to where you can get it: http://www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx_p93114.htm |

when I told my OPC to fill my tires with nitrogen like before on my c4s they told me that they wouldn't do it on a tt because it would significantly reduce the weight savings effects of the hollow spoke wheels!!! Any thoughts on this??? |
