When you consider the fact that a set of premium alloy centerlock wheels from a high-end manufacturer can easily cost $12K or more, the price for the carbon fiber wheels isn't so bad!
The price is obnoxiously high but they are beautiful and I got my geek on looking at that loom, so, thumbs up to Porsche for pushing the envelope!
Yes, these will be moving downmarket soon. It's already gone from a ~10s per year Koenigsegg to a ~100s per year 911 Turbo, so soon it will be on cars built in the thousands per year.
It's unclear to me whether it's worth it for "normal" cars; as others have said the weight/fuel savings will be kind of minimal, and the ability to repairs these when a "normal-car" driver whacks a curb will be limited, so we might end up throwing enough carbon and epoxy in the landfill to offset the fuel being saved.
