The expansion tank on my 1999 996 coupe cracked while i was driving. The hot liquid went every where. About 1/3 of the coolant spilled inside and dripped down the headers. So I have a few questions for some of you that have done this before.

1. Is there a difference between the tanks? They range in prices from $200 to $600 on pelican parts website?

2. Is brake clean safe to use to clean up the spilled coolant, is it safe for the electrical and hoses?

Also I tried starting it up today so I can drive it on blocks to be able to get the jack under it I want to take off the tire so I can clean up the headers and under the car. When I tried starting it up, it made a rattling sound and it shut off did not fully start. Is it possible for the coolant to have blocked or short circuit the plugs or injectors?

Not sure about the rattling, but if it's been leaking on an ignition coil, that could cause the engine to run weird.

You want the tank with the part number ending in 04, as that is the latest revision. This may not be correct for your year. Sorry.

I just ordered an OEM one from AutohausAZ for my MY2000 C2 - $202.49, no tax, free shipping. This would be the same one for a 99. I'm not currently having any issues with mine but I can tell from the color that its original. I might as well get one now as they're only likely to go up in price if I wait. I seem to remember reading that the R&R for this is a little easier than on MK-II models. Is that accurate?

@sweet victory Yes the coils could have gotten wet. What else should I look for? Are the injector connectors exposed? Is there any other electrical hard ware on that side?

Don't forget to order a gallon of Porsche coolant. Mix 50/50 with distilled water when topping up the new tank.

Doe it make sense to change out the original motor mounts at the same time? I haven't noticed any issues and even though I only have 65k on the clock, the car is 18 years old and I'm sure that gravity plays a part.

@wyovino the original motor mounts have been changed long time ago. To a more stiffer brand it gives a little bit of vibration in the cabin. And I like it. I feel more connected to the car and the way it drives.

@fpb111 I was thinking of using break kleen instead of a water to was out the coolant. And yes it's cracked.

Use Gunk, works great and it's cheaper.
