Question for 996.2 Tip owners...
Not prejudice against the first gen ones, just there's enough of a difference between the two.
SCENARIO: When manually shifting, putting it in 1st after complete stop, smooth engagement, and SOMETIMES (1 of 3) when starting off quickly there's a bit of "hard engagement". Also, if I'm crawling and put it in first, if I don't blip the rpm's a little there's a "hard engagement" also. Seems to do it a little more when very hot out and in traffic. All else with the trans seems to be fine.
QUESTION: Does your car do this? If not, is this something to have checked?

I have a 2003 and mine does this sometimes. Happens more often if I'm rolling up to stop and shift into first before it's completely stopped. It's happens less often if it's completely stopped.

What you describe feels similar to my experience with a 996.1 Tip (1999 with a ZF trans).
I have always just put it down to 1st being a pretty low or short gear and relatively quick full engagement from the torque converter.
Fluid recently topped up, but I am due for a filter change and fluid refresh.
