High Pitched Hum coming from dash-
I have a '04 40th Anniversary and when coming home from Werks Monterrey a high pitched humm starts coming from the dash area but only above 85 MPH. I say its a vibration hmm so I started looking for possible culprits- I changed out the grommets and tork screws for the cowels that are on the back of the frunk near the battery box. Nothing- that didn't help. Any other ideas. I apologize if this has been discussed- I searched and could find this issue in or interwebs. Im a newb and this is post one I think- I have had the car about 1.5 months and its baddass but this hmm...
I appreciate your help,
TG

Nothing common jumps to mind.
You may need to get out the felt tape and find the culprit that is rubbing or vibrating and isolate it.
Someone here mentioned that there is a TSB for rattles and noises. I haven't seen it, but maybe someone else here has?
Congrats on the car. Enjoy that x51!

Are you for real? Where are you driving that you can go 85 mph consistently enough to notice a hum coming from the dash? At 85, things start to get a bit tricky, at least on public roads, and the last thing I think you would be focused on is some nefarious hum.......
Also, have no idea what grommets and "tork" (torx) screws you are talking about.

Leave his speed between him and the CHP. I guarantee many of us here have seen 85 regularly.
No Porsche I've ever driven has an issue at 85, if yours does, it may need some love.
I understood the OP to mean that there are plastic trim panels under the windshield that are held in with torx fasteners.
Cut the new dude some slack, eh?

To OP: It would help to know where you think the hum is coming from, i.e., inside/outside, top of dash, bottom of dash. Describe the high pitched hum better. Could it be wind noise? Tires and road noise? Any recent work done on the car? Radio on or off? Windows open, cracked open or closed?

Noises in cars are notoriously difficult to find. Is your HVAC system completely off when you notice the hum? The center vents or side vents? Are the vents open or closed? Windows rolled up? Might even help to isolate the hum if you take a passenger along to listen while you are driving.

Flow of traffic on some of the highways and freeways here is easily 85MPH. The speed limit is 75; 10 over isn't exactly unheard of. The 1 and 2 lanes of I5 between Orange County and San Diego often run at 95-100MPH...

video of the sound I to have on my 996
I have the exact same issue on my 1999 996 that I bought a month back. Mine starts the noise at 70 mph and gets less at over 85ish. It comes from around the front window on the drivers side where the windshield meets the dash/hood. annoying for sure. I looked around and found nothing out of sorts. I too would love to figure out what is causing this. I heard it replicated in a YouTube video of a guy tracking his 996, granted he is going much faster but it is the exact same sound I get at 70.
at 6:20 the hum I am describing kicks in.

Not sure where to find it, but Porsche had a TSB (technical service bulletin) about Noise in the Door/Trim Panel, A Pillar. It is TSB 7057. Maybe a Porsche dealer can bring that up. I believe it involves replacing the windshield frame support and trim piece. Unfortunately I believe it also requires removing the windshield to replace the windshield frame.

Maybe put speed tape or painters tape around some of the panel gaps or windshield frame to see if u can isolate the problem area.
