Default Battery Dead

My shade tree let the battery run down on my 1999 996. Cannot open doors due to battery dead and frunk latch inside car. Any ideas on how to unlock? Thanks. Really appreciate this site.

Have you tried opening the door with the key?

There's a manual cable you need to fish out.

Why won't the key unlock the door?

Sounds like the door latch is disconnected (broken) inside. I think the only option is to fish out the frunk or engine lid cable.

Behind the front passenger wheel liner there is a small cable, pull that and it will open the frunk (it can be very hard to find), before you pull the liner, pull the plug for the tow hook, some people (who know) relocate the cable there).

Additionally, there is a cable to get into the engine compartment. Use a hanger, and pull int under the drivers tail lite. you should be able to grab the cable. Pull it and it will release the engine compartment and you can jump the car from there.

I guess this answers whether or not the locking issues apply to 1999’s. I’ve seen many references that it did not.

The doors in my 2000 dont need any power for the key to unlock them. I didnt think a mk2 was any different???

As others have said fish out the cables and i would open up the door card to see if your key/lock mechanism is working properly. The plast clips break and many dont know because they always use the fob.

Hi All,

We make some cool product to eliminate this scenario that the original poster is talking about...

First is a Harness Kit that will allow one of the MINI Jump Starters to be attached to it and this allows you to energize or start the car.... simply plug in our MICRO-START mini Jump Starters or another Brand and open the frunk or start the car... OUr Micro-Start Xp-10 won Consumer Reports best rated Jump Starter... so it a best in class unit.

You can see our MICRO-STARTs Here>>>>https://antigravitybatteries.com/pro.../micro-starts/

The Harness Kit Here>>>>>>https://antigravitybatteries.com/pro...s-msa10b-long/

And then we have our Flagship Lithium-Ion Starter Battery.... This battery has WIRELESS, BUILT-IN JUMP STARTING.... so you will never be locked out of your Vehicle or come back to a dead battery, or have to have assistance to open the frunk or start the Car. It has and on-board Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors its voltage... and just before being over-discharged to "dead" it will put itself to sleep, but with just enough energy to energize the car to open the frunk , or to start the car about 5 more times. Then you just drive it or recharge it to bring up the charge again. No other battery can do this, or does.

So other advantages are...

- 8 to 10 year lifespan,
- Full Battery management system so it can't go dead, or be damaged like Lead/Acid by and accidental over-discharge. Also has Short Circuit and Thermal Protections.
- Weighs only 15lbs.... removes 30 lbs just changing the battery out. So if you are into Performance this is by far the largest bang for the buck in weight loss from any part you can buy for a Car.
- Installs in the exact location of the stock battery with the exact same size. So not modifications necessary. Plug and play operation
- over TWICE the cranking Amps of Lead/Acid Batteries...
- Available in different amp hour sizes from 24Ah ( only 11lbs) to 60Ah (16lbs) so different Amp Hours for different applications (Track vs Street use)

-

The mechanical door mechanism does not need power. The manual is rubbish in not explaining how to open it.
‘I drained my battery last week, here are the steps:
1. Pull out key from remote fob.
2. Lift up the door handle and turn anti-clockwise, fully clockwise and back to start position.
3. Pull handle and open the door.
4. Open frunk with door switch.
5. If the switch is dead you can power the lid opener through the passenger side compartment. Manual explains this well.
