Default Introduction

I was in the market for a toy or project car and a friend suggested I but his 996, I wasn't really interested, but who turns down the chance to drive a 911. About three minutes in, or when I got to the expressway onramp, I knew what I was going to buy. His had a automatic transmission, and the paddle shifters were fun, but not really my thing. I am the guy that special orders his econobox daily driver with a six speed, because the car shouldn't have all the fun. I started my research, I took my total budget subtracted the cost of upgrades and likely repairs and started shopping. It took about two months to find the right car in the right condition at the right price.

I ended up with a 2001 C4 Cab, that had about 3k in deferred maintenance, and could best be described as cosmetically challenged. She had about 76,500 miles on her when I picked her up and 500 more by the time she got home. That was back in September, since then the maintenance has been brought up to date, new brakes, new tires, I have cleaned radiators, all the "drains", replaced all the broken plastic broken bits inside and out. all the interior lighting has been swapped to LEDs repainted the car and added 3k to the clock.

The first of next month she goes in for new upholstery and then I think I am done until fall. The first pic I took last week, the second was right after she came home.

A Rennlister in Shelley? Never would have thought that would happen. Welcome!

Your experience sounds like mine. Deferred maintenance, new parts, plastic bits, etc etc.

Out of curiosity, what are you having re-upholstered? I need to get my front and rear seats done. What are you using for material?

Nikita at Sew Perfect in IF. I am doing front and rear seats now, rebuilding the foam and using all leather. all the other quotes I got involved ordering a seat kit and installing it. They were more money and only 50% leather, and I would still have to order foam. I thought about ordering the kits and doing it myself, but I was afraid it would look like I did it. She started her quote with "it looks like it will take one and a half hides" and I was pretty much sold right there. I am switching to red stitching and making a few minor changes to the design.

The total job was $7,900.00 but that includes new front bumper skin and I replaced one of the lights with a nicer used part and some plastic bits. If it was just paint alone I think it would be around $5,500.00. The paint shop that did the work has done some other cars for me, and I probably paid a premium, but at the same time I let it cure for four months before the first polish and was still able to go back and have a couple of spots fixed no problem.

Looks great! Kudos on stepping up and having it repainted, amongst other things. So nice when these cars are brought back to their best.

Mind telling me how much you paid to have the seats redone? You can PM me if you like.

I think the fronts were quoted at $2'200 and $500 more for the backs.the fronts are basically total rebuilds, new foam, I have to replace the base on one and I am having the mesh supports reinforced. There are some cracked plastic parts that have to be replaced also (if my parts make it in time) when it's done I will post some pictures, I can pm you then and show you the car, if you think they look good.

Seats are In! The leather hides were stuck in the midwest for a couple weeks, so we were a little delayed, but I think it was worth the wait.

Nice. I was looking to see what Diamond Mats would look like in the 996. How do you like those? Are they slippery?
