Default Spin on filter and viscosity

LN mentions to use at most 5w40 with the spin on adapter. Porsche has been pushing 5w50 for a little while now with their own product. I picked up a case of M1 5w50 to try. Is the spin on filter going to create an issue with flow with the higher warm viscosity??

Interesting thread about the plastic oil filters from, 2 known vendors saying to get the spin on filter and than the thread goes on with the plastic oil filters again lol

I currently have the OEM plastic filter on my car and the POs all used the same for 68k , I dont see it changing it on my next oil change

Why not contact LN for an official response? In my opinion, 5W50 will not cause harmful resistance to flow based on how oil viscosities are built up.

I do know that LN recommends the use of DT40 for the M96 and DI40 for direct injection engines starting with the 997. They also recommend Motul Xcess 8100 if A40 is of concern.

We normally would recommend against using a 50wt with the spin on oil filter adapter. You can risk a flow restriction at cold start in colder climates. However M1 5w50 basically shears into a 40wt almost right away, so that's not going to cause any issue, especially if you live in a hotter climate.

If you run one of the longer alternate filters listed that have increased filter surface area or a billet washable filter with a higher micron element, this should not be an issue.

I do also want to reiterate not to use a 10w60 in these engines.
