Default 996 Engine value

So I found a pulled 2001 996 engine that was pulled 2 years ago because of coolant in 3rd cylinder. They want $3000 for it. What is realistic for this core motor?

Thanks

Joey

What does a D-chunk repair cost these days? Heads and cams alone would be a couple grand parted out, I’d think. If the engine’s sat for 2 years without any removal of fluids, it could end up being a s*** show.

The sitting part worries me the most.

somewhere between $0 and $35,000 depending on if you ask @bdronsick or @Flat6 Innovations

Why too much. When i was looking it was $1-1.5k for the core as my block was blown up.

Dont think heads r worth more then $500 as cores. I wish they were worth more as u have a good set if cores to sell off.

I know you have experience with this. Is the $3k too much? What do you think it is worth with a lot of unknowns. Thanks

I would say $1,000 max. I would not buy it unless you want to send it to LN Engineering for Bigger stronger cylinders! (3.8 litre's)

Did you sell your engine?

What would the crankshaft be worth if it were in good condition? Since LN sells these in new condition for ~$5K a used one in good condition might be what, $2,500??

Yeah, but coolant sitting in the engine for 2 years pretty much assures the crank is a corroded paper weight doesn’t it?

Seller got back to me and said fluids were drained and motor was fogged before storage. Still make me nervous about it sitting for that long.

Please treat the unknown engine as an unknown core. Realistically very few parts can be salvaged. Spending $3000 on this would be a gamble that has very few good outcomes for you.

I did sell a 2001 996 engine as an extremely loud knocking engine for $1600. It started and ran but knocked so loud I was afraid to move it around the shop. All of these problems were disclosed and the buyer still purchased it.

Maybe a good block, but you really have to trust not only the integrity, but the mechanical knowledge of the seller to even consider purchasing this.

I purchased a 3.6 motor complete except for the wiring harness and mufflers in May for $1200. It turns over but has a bad IMS. I have not disassembled it to determine the internal damage yet.

Good point. If that were the case then it wouldn't be worth very much.

I bought a perfectly running 3.6 (AT) motor 3 years ago with 50K mile on it for $6K. It was running in the car it was pulled from and I'd not buy one I couldn't hear running. Anything else is a roll of the dice!
