Default Maintainer for winter - 2000 996

Hi there,

I did some searching around and did not come up with exactly what I was looking for. I just need a maintainer for winter here in Oregon. I have a 2000 911 with a cigarette lighter and heard I can buy one that hooks up there. I may or may not take the car out if we get some nice days. It is hard to say with winters here in Central Oregon. Can you point me to specific products that will work for my application? I have never done this before as my cars in the past have always been winter driveable

Appreciate any assistance you can provide!

I have my car on a charger/automaintaner that I got from AutoZone. I plug it in the cigarette lighter. I think the brand is Schumann and it cost like $50. You don't need anything fancy, just a regular battery charger and auto maintaner. Been using mine for years now.

This is the one I have and it is perfect for my AGM battery. Since COVID hit, I drive my car one time a week to the grocery store and back home. I got the name wrong - Schumacher. You can get one on Amazon.

I bought this for my 2000 996 (first N.E. winter with the car):
Shumacher Direct Mount Shumacher Direct Mount
I bought it based on the recommendation of a friend who owns a 94 911 cab and has used this brand for years (he uses the Mity Mite). It connects to the battery terminals. My car goes into storage as soon as the snow and/or road salt flies. Good luck.

This plugs into the cigarette outlet and works great.

My car is only driven once a week or two even during the summer and I’ve never had a problem.

You can get one cheaper (without the Porsche logo) from CTEK.

Does the maintainer really do anything if you drive it once a week? I'll put one on during the "southeast winter", which might extend 4-6 weeks depending on temperatures. Never had a problem not using for weekly or bi-weekly drives though.

That’s a great question.

I always leave my 996 in the garage unlocked and plugged into the Porsche CTEK.
Because I’m not sure when it’s being driven again.
It could be a couple of days or a few weeks.
And I figure that it can’t hurt.

I have used the Deltran battery tenders on my two non-winter cars for years with success. They come in a variety of output ratings.

Black and decker makes one but it looks the same as other generic ones. Plugs into the lighter and there is a cutout on the passenger door to accommodate the wire. Works great for me. I drive mine all winter but still less than during the summer. Locking it saves battery power I’m told.

Not locking your 996 prevents the car from going into "sleep mode which minimizes battery drain.

When I bought my 2000 Boxster "S' in 2003 in Portland OR. The owner did not drive it much so he used the Porsche branded Battery Maintainer with a 20ft long cord that connects in the lighter receptical. I still use it every night.

I'm guessing that like myself you got locked out of your 996
because I have MKII with the electric hood and engine cover actuation

after 2 or 3 days - I don't want to guess, I want my car to start
prefer to leave mine unlocked when in the garage ( more draw on battery )
it's just habit now to leave the hood (frunk) unlocked and the CTEK plugged in

100% success
