Default Replace or rebuild 996 manual transmission?

I have a 996 C2 with a slightly noisy transmission and my mechanic is suggesting pinion bearing(s) are gone. Cost differential to pull and rebuild versus replace with an existing one is massive. Any trusted sources for a used 996 six speed trans? Or best to have this one rebuilt?

http://www.gboxweb.com/rebuild2.html

These guys are highly regarded around here. It's really up to you whether you want to do a rebuild or replacement.
Good replacements can be had from salvage yards with under 100k for 1,000-2,000$

For example there is a 71k mile 6 speed in NC for 1800$ +200 shipping

With gearbox, I have always thought that rebuilding the devil I know is better than buying the devil I don't know. But, money speaks.

Do you want to fix it or rebuild it? I had the pinion bearing go on mine and I just replaced that bearing, northing else. Found that VW has the identical bearing for $140CDN that Porsche sells for $500CDN and that's what I used.

I'll second this. Gboxweb rebuilt my 6spd. Their service and workmanship is top notch.

Another happy Gbox customer.

I'd go for rebuilt (can send yours or they have stock for faster turn around). Junkyard replacement - you never know what you'll get.

I bought a unit they already had rebuilt and sent mine for core. No pop out problems since.

Put in new shifter and cables at the same time. Shifts great.

Yes, thanks, the question is whether they return to original or if they undertake to actually change it. My understanding is that the shimming actually has to be changed from original spec but maybe that's wrong.

Box make a part to eliminate the 2nd gear pop out. I put one in my transmission years ago, then I had them rebuild my trans when the pinion bearing became noisy. I think all their rebuilds include this mod,

Gbox sells all the parts for the re-shim as well as a write up on their web page.. I suspect they know what they are doing.
Been debating on this same decision myself, mainly rebuild.. If you can find a C4 6 speed the used ones are close to cost of a used box.

Seems a rebuild is the recommend I hear most, but the time to perform this and the open ended cost ("depends what we find") is scary. I drive my 996 like a workhorse. The guys in Colorado seem legit. Anyone bought a rebuilt trans from them?
