Look for a 4 digit number, possibly on the other side.

Take a pic of the whole front of the tire so we can help you.

There will be a “DOT #” on both sides of the tire, but only one of them has the extra digits. The 4 digit date code is on the opposite side of the tire from your picture, flip it over…

OK, I'll bite, and ask the obvious dumb question.
Why do they put the damned thing on the back?

I don't believe they do. From what I have seen the "born date" is always on the outside of the tire. OP....you sure your looking at the correct tire side?

Ah! The character string is longer than I thought. So on my tires the XX XX characters are indeed on the front...thanks
It's cold and raining here....hence I'm on the board chasing stuff....

Since the date code needs to be changed with a stamping plate in the mold, it is easier (cheaper) to change only one side. Cosmetically, this would create a somewhat sloppier DOT Code thus date code in the inner sidewall. Many companies now do a better job with this and the date code is included on both inner and outer sidewalls.

The first series of numbers indicate the Manufacturing Plant (name/location) and an internal construction or product code. On the example above, I believe MD indicates the Michelin plant in Greenville, SC.
