My airbag light came on. I cleared it with a Durametric but it came back immediately. I checked the error code and it points to the Drivers Side Airbag Control Module 996.618.219.01. I Googled that part number and you can find used replacements for cheap but the new superseded part is over $1400.
How accurate is Durametric software when it comes to providing Part Number information?
Where is this control module? It doesn't appear to be in the door.
Does it make sense to buy used or cough up the $1400?

I know I have a passenger side airbag controller, and I believe it is identical in appearance.
If you’re not in a huge hurry, I can get you one for a less money.

Oops, the driver side that I have is also marked 996.618.221.00.
They are the same left and right.
The 996.618.221.00;is for 996.1, the 996.618.221.01 is for 996.2.
But the picture you have above is not correct for a 996.618.221.01.
The .01 looks similar to the .0.

Yes, it appears that the part number is wrong according to the PET:
According to the MSP Pages, M563 is the side aribag.
Best bet would be to contact a Porsche parts person and have them confirm the correct part number.
I have a used, and assumed working good, side airbag sensor.(996.618.221.00)
It came off a Porsche Boxster that was stripped to make an Exocet-ish track car.
If I recall correctly it was located along the outside of the drivers compartment near the fusebox.
The part number listed in Durametric is for the "main air bag controller" the picture shown is also the main controller.
The are also the air bag modules themselves and the crash sensors. The fault code listed seems to indicate a fault in the "side airbag " on the drivers side, which would be in the door panel, but follow the diagnostics in the Porsche Shop Manual to be certain of the fault repair.
"Ignition circuit" could well be the wiring from the airbag control box in the center console to the side airbag in the driver's door - or it could be the side airbag isn't plugged in all the way.
Fault Code 12 is not listed in the manual. I guess I'm going to bring it in to the shop.

Fault code 12 is indeed a drivers "side air bag" fault, and is listed in later Shop Manuals and refers to the firing circuit of the drivers "side" air bag in the door.
Test step #8 is required. Test step #8 is very simple ( note:: follow ALL safety precautions for Air Bag)
1 clear fault memory.
2 with ignition OFF disconnect drivers side airbag and plug in Special tool 9516 and 9516/2 ( known good airbag simulator)
3 Turn ignition ON and check for fault codes.
Results :: IF fault does not return with Special Tool connected ( known good airbag) Replace drivers side airbag
IF fault returns, check wiring from airbag to main controller for cuts, chaffs, pinches Repair if necessary, IF wiring good, Replace main controller
I don't have access to the special tool but I'm going to disconnect and reconnect the airbag. My door was replaced a few years ago after an accident. It's possible that the connection has come loose.

Yea, good idea, There is also a larger connector in the "door jam" behind the kick panel that could also be half connected..
U can just use a resistor for a steering wheel airbag to test the system. If it clears the cide then u know its either the connection or the actual bag.

^^^^ Good common since approach/substitute for the "Special Tool"/" known good airbag" and just may work....

I finally got around to unplugging and replugging the airbag connection in the door. No change. Do you know the name of the connector so I can bypass the airbag with the proper resistor?
