996 C4S - Correct tail pipe clamp
Hi all,
My nearside tail pipe is rattling and I suspect the clamp has gone (if I put my foot on it, the rattle goes). It's this model with the access hole underneath for the clamp - https://cdn.rosepassion.com/99611125...&format=jpg-95
If I try and unscrew using the access hole, it just turns and turns so will need to be broken off so I want the right replacement one before I do that.
Based on my research, I bought 99611110800 but a local garage said it wasn't the right one. The tail pipe it connects to is drawn differently in the diagram, but I assumed that was because there are so many tailpipe variants - https://www.design911.co.uk/uploads/...98-05_No22.gif
The tailpipe itself seems to have one incorporated in the photo above that looks similar but also slightly different to the one I bought, so I am wondering if the clamp I bought is wrong, and the right one only comes with the tailpipe as a bundle? I can't find another one on it's own.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I replaced the exhaust clamps on my '99 C4 with stainless steel strap clamps, similar to this one...the strap clamps are MUCH easier to deal with than the OEM clamps.

The clamp shown in my images inside the tip looks slightly different, so I'm just trying to find out if that clamp itself can be bought or whether it's the same as the one I've bought.
Here's a screen grab from a video I found, where he's cutting off a clamp higher up the pipe that looks similar to the one I have bought (22 from the diagram underneath) so there seems to be another clamp inside the tip that's integral and seems only available with the tip?

Here for instance: Is missing the L and the bracket
Here you can see the L plate but not the the bracket that should fix it to the silencer pipe
Here you see both pipes with their respective "L" brackets attached to the exhaust pipe

Pay attention to the last sector of the pipe itself, where the tail is attached. It is specific to the C4S and It has a welded "L" shape bracket that is fixed to the silencer pipe with its own bracket to avoid vibrations (and eventually breaking the clamp you mention. They tend to break (the L bracket). A lot of C4Ss that you see under carriage photos have the L shape plate and/or the bracket missing.
There seems to be one join that needs a vbank style clamp (the one I have bought) and another join that needs the band style as shown above. If it's the latter, can I get just that clamp?

That clamp comes with the tail pipe. Not sure if u can get it seperate. I thought it was spot welded in there? Might have to see if a dealers pet drawings r better?

I have a C4S and disassembled the tailpipes to clean them. That clamp does come off, but it has a concave shape on the inside, and rough knurls so it doesn't slide. I think it's a bit unique.
As you can see on the clamp around the pipe, there is a square nut on top, and a spacer under the bolt head. You might just see if the square nut is spinning, or if you can replace the nut/bolt if they aren't tightening down.
I have pictures, but can post them late tonight.

Finally looked at my pictures. De Jeeper was right, the clamp itself is part of the tailpipe.
There is a ring which goes around the exhaust pipe and inside of the clamp, which is separate, and the nut/bolt are removable. There are tabs that should keep the original square nut from spinning, but on mine I had to replace one of the square nuts with a standard flared hex nut, so I had to reach in there to hold it while tightening.
The rust and dirt made it really hard to take apart! It was easier to take the v-band clamp off above this and to work with the whole section on the bench. Even then this is wet with penetrating oil, and I almost ran out of elbow grease.
I cleaned it all, polished the tailpipe, and here the small ring is back on the exhaust pipe. I actually used a screwdriver to spread the tabs on the tailpipe, then inserted the exhaust and ring together. It's a little tricky.
Here it is all put back together, with a new hex nut on top. The original square nut should be retained by the tabs. I did have to get a wrench onto both sides, but my car was raised at the time, so that wasn't too bad. I also used alot of high temp antiseize on the rings.

Good deal. I have a semi loose tailpipe too but i have been ignoring it. might have to get to it this winter.

My girlfriend points out my tailpipe rattle frequently, I'm in the car so I don't hear it. I think it is the tailpipe but I can't seem to get it to tighten. This thread is very helpful. Thanks to all who contributed!

I managed to take a picture and confirm the entire bolt, spacer and nut combo are fused together and spin as a single unit. The clamp looks in good shape, so just need to somehow get it off and replace the bolt, spacer and nut with generic equivalents as I doubt it's worth trying to salvage anything.

Three Wheelin'
I used a dremel with a cut-off wheel, and bought the V-bands from Pellican.
I used T-bolt clamps to hold the exhaust to the support where it had the split bands before.
Got the wrap style clamps from pellican as well.
Don't re-use any of them the stock ones are not stainless. (I have a higher mileage car so they were nasty to remove. )

Agree but neither of those clamps will work for the inside of the tailpipe and thats were the issue is in this thread.
