1999 996
I posted on this site saying I was a retired Civil Engineer and wanted to learn all about Porsches 1999-2005. My first learning event was a Copart auction which I bid and got a 1999 911 with 84,000 miles, clean exterior and interior, runs and drives. I know now I’m not the only one screwed by Copart. I installed a lift, got the manuals, and tools to work on the car. I’m 74 and in no rush to get this car on the road. When it was delivered to my house it started and the motor sounded fine , no smoke.. However no clutch, couldn’t move it.. I get it up on the lift and see the main transmission housing is cracked all around. After a lot of work trying to fix the transmission I called Stanley and got a rebuilt transmission with a slip differential and installed that in the car. I put new IMS Bearing in, the old one looked brand new. Installed new dual mass flywheel, clutch, throw out bearing, oil seals, oil water separator etc. Took the car out for a ride and before long I heard a rod knocking in the engine. Good thing I’m retired. So now I need to rebuild the engine or find one with low mileage. My first thought was let’s rebuild it. As I worked on the car I found a small leak in bottom of motor. It was a fine crack. Welded and repaired it. Since the main casing on the transmission was cracked completely around, a bolt hold broke off of the engine housing, welded that and this small crack I wonder if I should get it rebuilt. Looking for information on reputable shops that rebuild this engine or purchase a used one. I’m in Northern Westchester NY in the summer 5 months. Looking for someone experienced to help me remove motor. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Porsche still sells a factory short block, I would look into that as the most cost effective/safest way to get the car back on the road especially since your doing all of the work yourself. A used engine is full of question marks and a rebuild will cost significantly more.

My mama would say in this case... "Suck it up buttercup. You made this bed, now lie in it!"
Now, if you really want to keep this car, get the car towed to a reputable Porsche shop and have the engine safely removed and rebuilt. You could go cheap and install a used engine, but again, risky. Do it right, or do it twice.
