Where are all the 996s?

I have one anecdote as it relates to the younger crowd and the 996. The only time I take my car to the dealer is for a state inspection. It's right up the street from me and I'd rather not leave it with Firestone. The last time I was there the teenaged porter who had earlier parked my car came running across the service drive as I was getting in it to tell me how much he loved my car and how nice it is. I figure that kid has got to be pretty jaded when it comes to Porsche cars as I see all sorts of fancy stuff rolling through that place when I go in.
Other than that one experience, I'm pretty much ignored in my car wherever I go. Even other 996 drivers don't return my waves. :-/

But you will find some Snobs, and they will ususally be at the C&C events..If you get involved in PCA and y'all have a lot of "driving events ' like we do.....just gatherings to go drive the backroads to a predetermined place for a lunch gathering, or to a car musiuem, or to a watterfall, or historic site, or view...this is where you will find the good car people with the water-cooled cars. Hardly ever will there be an air-cooled car, ( they just aren't reliable enough ususally, or thier owners aren't really interested in driving them).. and no Snobs at all...
I remember many times we would have 30-40 cars for a drive and only 1 or 2 air-cooled cars, and they would break-down in the middle of the drive, or have to peel-off early due to car trouble...I was the "Sweeper " for the driving event and would have to stay behind to get them going again, or get them help/tow...
But the driving events, Track events, or just Daily Duty is where all the water-cooled cars are....

Made it out to a GGR PCA cars and coffee yesterday (Pete's coffee in Los Gatos) and was surprised at the lack of 996's in attendance.
Good representation of 986's, 987's, 944's, 968 (at least 1), a 914, 356, air cooled 911's, a soft top 911 targa....... GT cars of every color (GT3/GT3 RS's, GT4/GT4 RS's) multiple silver 993 C4S's
Plenty of 991, 992 variants, but only one 996........ lots of 997s..... I just found it strange at the lack of 996's. (also no 928's)
Is this the norm? (are 996 owners too religious to attend a cars and coffee on Easter?)
-Eric
04 996
99 986
09 987.2 CS (too recently departed to discuss)
90 964 (rear ended by a school bus)
90 944S2 (little old lady in a Honda tried to drive over the hood)
87 951 (failed drivers ed)

I do know that the 996s are slowly but surely becoming more desirable. Which is one small reason why i decided to buy one a couple years ago. The prices for these may only increase so i thought id get one before it was too late haha.
Maybe i'll see you at one of the GGR events these days.

Eric, my black 996 was at the Autovino meet.
Any chance you could recommend either the Alice’s breakfast meet this Saturday, or the EASY meet, at the same time?

I just gladly handed over top dollar for a one owner, glacier white, 6-speed, 99 coupe. Factory black leather sport seats with color matched rear shells, limited slip, 18” twists, and some other fun options.
I own other Porsches including an 05 GT3 and a 718 cayman 4.0. So I’m a pcar koolaid addict. no doubt.
My point though is: People are seeking out and paying for cool 996’s right now. I looked for a long time for a car like this. I’m so excited about it. I love the size and lightness of the 996, especially the early ones. (I had a 99 before and have regretted selling it.) There is an ocean of difference in driving experience between the 99 and the 05 GT3. They are two wildly different cars. The 99 is just a perfect mix between old and new and a delight to drive. In my view it’s a damned near perfect weekend toy and car to drive to work on Fridays.

Yeah, the air cooled guys are getting older as each day goes by. As such, the mindset is shifting.
Those that used to track their air cooled cars don't anymore because prices have gone up substantially and they dont want to risk damage. Quite a few are selling, taking profits and buying water cooled cars. Who can blame them?
Not to mention, air cooled cars are down 200-300 hp to the new 911s and Caymans that now populate a DE event. A good portion of these guys are exceptional drivers, but their cars can't keep up with the power and techno wizardry of the new cars. I know quite a few who are going thru or have gone thru this exercise.

I’ve been surprised and disappointed at 996-hate at car shows.
People have gone out of their way to tell me that they don’t like the 996. Pointing out the headlights… saying it’s their least favorite gen. Etc etc.
its honestly kinda shocking at what is supposed to be a meet for enthusiasts.
I wonder if that kind of behavior and attitude has made other 996 owners shy away from meets.

^^^^^^ Those kind of people are missing some testosterone ....
If they are driving a Porsche older than a 996 tell them you don't like cars that the pedals swivel at the bottom.....
If they drive a newer model Porsche, buy them a beer and tell them how much money you saved by not buying the model they drive...

Sounds just like what happened with the 964. Give it another year or two and the same knuckleheads will be asking you for a ride and autograph. Like I said earlier on this thread, someday the girl next door grows up and everybody wants to date her. Just wait.
