Question Engine cleaning - any suggestions?

My engine compartment can use a cleaning. Any suggestions on the best and easiest way to do this without screwing anything up? Also, looking for advice on cleaning the bottom of the motor and transaxle. I guess Gunk would work, but would like to know if there are better options.

Simple Green is what I use. Works great. Just make sure to stuff a towel in the air intake tube (DON'T forget to remove it when your done!!!) and make sure your oil dipstick is pushed in all the way.

I typically clean my engine compartment before washing my car so make sure you hose the back of the car down to help with the overspray of the SG.

Simply spray the SG on, let it set a few minutes and hose it off. For the bottom of your car, you may need to scrub or use a slightly more aggressive cleaning agent.

I also use Simple Green and use plastic grocery bags to cover the intake/electrical areas. Hose the engine compartment, remove bags. I follow up with my air compressor to blow out the excess water and spray ArmorAll on all of the plastic parts but not the S-belt. Then I close it and let it air dry.

Man, I would not let ArmorAll anywhere NEAR my car. It's loaded with silicone -nasty stuff!

Also you have to be careful with the blower. You might force some water or debris into areas that can be damaged by them.

Thanks for the tips guys (949/996 thanks for posting the original question). My engine compartment was also in need of serious cleaning.

How often do you guys clean the engine compartment? Do you do it everytime you wash your car? Hopefully I can just wipe it down whenever I wash my car.
