Newbee HELP - 1999's Problems?
Hey All - I have just decided to say F it and blow some $$ on a 996 since I have allways wanted one!!! This will be my 1st Porsche and my budget is only 34k - 38k so I am looking at 99's & 2000's.
Found a great 99 with the aero Kit and 48k miles. Have you been hearing about issues with the 99's due to being the 1st model year with the w/c engine? Any thing else I should be looking for?
Thanks for your help!!!

I'm the 3rd owner of a '99 coupe with tiptronic. It had the coolant tank leak, airbag issue due to the seatbelt harness and a few other minor things. BTW, I had a PPI performed before buying the car and all of these issues were covered by the previous owner at no increase in the selling price. Other than those its been a great car and I love driving it every day (10k miles since I bought it in March). I wouldn't hesitate to buy another '99 myself. Its been a great car and lots of fun overall.

There isnt really problems only specific to 99 AFAIK. Most problems you read on this forum are applicable to all MYs and aren't really something major. Coolank Reservoir leak can be fixed by replacing it with the updated tank and should cost you about $200 (DIY). Dont let RMS scare you away either. Most RMS can be fixed under $1K and this problem isnt also specific to MY 99.
I have 99 Aero and people ask all the time what model it is. To most people, MK1 GT3 body kit makes the base 996 totally different car. One guy at the local gas station was asking if it was a new model from Porsche. My car does look brand new. If you buy a car that's been very well taken care of, the exterior can look as good (almost) as new. There are so may 996s where I live but I've seen only few 996 w/Aero body.
Enjoy.

I got mine on April 3, 2004 with 34,999 miles. Replaced coolant tank Aug 3, 2004 with reinforced replacement part . Just rolled over 46,000 miles on a club rally yesterday. No RMS repair on this car yet. Most RMS problems show up by 40,000 miles.

Jeev, go for 2000 if you can, a few nice improvements over '99s and probably worth it in the end.

you are kidding right? ALL YEARS, for the 996, have an RMS issue not just the '99s. with that said, i have 75K on the clock with NO RMS . no problems with the engine but i've had to replace the coolant tank (easy fix), starter motor, oil return tubes, clutch
some of the super early '99s reportedly had engine block porosity problems leading to oil-coolant intermix, but it was rare.

i second what Ubergeek is saying (since i have the other red 996 aero kit), most people whom are not P-car owners think it is a new one. 37K miles and no problems (no RMS, not a 99 specific issue), nada. The Interior plastic bits are a have a grey-ish finish which some people hate (i don't mind it) - it has to be your call. Check them both out.
Also the 99' has a throttle cable - i believe the 00 has e-Gas.
