OT: Bittersweet Day
18 years ago, at 12:19 A.M., my wife gave birth to my son Damian. Two minutes later, at 12:21 A.M., she gave birth to my daughter Devyn. Yes, we were blessed with twins. What a wonderful day that was in my life!
Today is the 18th birthday of my children! However, only Devyn has turned 18 years of age. Six years ago, on May 13, 1999, my son Damian died unexpectedly in his sleep. He was only 11 years old. He had always been a healthy, active boy. We don't know why he died, and we will never the cause of his death.
So today is very bittersweet for all three of us. While we celebrate a milestone in my daughter’s life, we wonder why there is not a second milestone to celebrate. Unfortunately, the grief always seems to overshadow the joy that this day brings. It is really unfair to my daughter, Devyn, because she no longer has her brother and her best friend to share this day with her.
You may be wondering why I have posted this here. I want to celebrate my daughter’s life, and I want a few more people in this world to know that my son, Damian, was here, too! Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Tim, we go through the same thing here in my family. My brother died in 1999 and now we celebrate his DOD instead of DOB to celebrate his life. Took several years but I actually look forward to every June 12th b/c I get to think back how beautiful of a person my brother was and think about the lives he touched and the way he lived his life. Not sure what y'all do around your house, but maybe something like that would work?
Nonetheless, so sorry to hear about the tragedy of losing your son. Celebrate his life.

As a father of two young girls, I can just imaging what it is like to lose my own kid. As many people said before, I am sure Damien is with your family and is happy that both he and his sister turned 18.
My prayers are with you and your family.

I wanted to share this special day with my new friends on the Rennlist Forum. Thank you all for the kind words. It is GREATLY appreciated! My daughter, Devyn has turned into a very beautiful young woman. Here is a scanned in copy of one of her high school senior year pictures. (Sorry for the rather poor quality of the pic.)

What a beautiful young lady, Tim. You and your wife must be very pleased with her. I'm sure she has feelings on this day as well. As the day moves along to late afternoon I hope that it has been a fulfilling one for your family.
