ubergeek, regarding the PM i sent you earlier, i'm posting the info up hear since there seems to be some other interest.
Retail Price is 550$US
Rennlist Price 490$US
I can offer a savings of 60$ on the bypass pipes brand new. Shipping is of course extra.

I'm interested in a used Fabspeed bypass, but this is ubergeek's thread so I'll hold off on any PM's. Are cat bypasses the same as the muffler bypass (I'm guessing not).

Nope, they are indeed different.
The cat bypasses will bypass the catalytic converters. You will fail emissions without a cat, but will probably gain some power and save 20-25 pounds. When used in conjunction with mufflers, the exhaust is louder and rougher but not unbareable.
The muffler bypass pipes remove the mufflers, saving i believe 40-50lbs and maybe yeilding some small gains at the top end of the powerband, but the real advantage was the weight savings.
These are loud. I'm daily driving with them but for most the noise is just too much and there is droan at low RPM's in the cabin. For highway cruising, if u old at around 3k-3.2k rpm and turn on cruise control they just up and go into a faint roar.
Using both in conjunction would yeild a full straight pipe, would be very loud, probably spit some flames once in a while, be a great weight savings, but would be...well....VERY DAMNED LOUD...tru racecar loud!.

Thanks dead-eye! I really like the sounds of the bypass, but I'm definitely worried about drone as the 996 is my daily driver - sounds like I should skip it and wait for a good deal on the full fabspeed or PSE.

I got C4S Surgeon's used Fabspeed exhaust. (Thanks for cutting me a great deal!)
They sound great and were fairly easy to install myself.
Not sure of any power gain, but at least now I don't have to look at the tach to see when to shift.
They are agressive when you give it gas, but are fairly subtle when you are just cruising - perfect!

I think I may be looking for something like the exhaust bypass, but I am afraid that they will be too loud & also that it may create attention from the cops.
Is there a good exhaust that is somewhere between the Fabspeed maxflo and the Fabspeed exhaust bypass?

^ fabspeed Maxflo + cat bypass may be what you're looking for. You'll have 2 bolt the cats back on for smogging ever year or two (depending on where u live..up here it's once every 2 years)
