I just got my car back from the mechanic and they filled my car with 5w-30, is this OK? It is Castrol Syntec 5W-30, should I drain it? Should I have brought my own Mobil 1 0W-40 oil to the shop w/ me? Help, will I destroy my engine?

It's not the 5 vs 0 you should be worried about, it's the 30 vs 40 (or 50) that should be of concern. Do a search on oil weight and you'll learn more than you ever want to know about the great oil debate.

Agree with c4. 30 is too light. Plus Castrol Syntec 5w-30 is not Porsche approved but Castrol Syntec 5w-40 is. Note that the lastest from Porsche approved list are 0w-40 or 5w-40 from various brands.
Hope it helps.

Sorry to say but I would drain and refill with 0w-40 if I were you. A lot of people favor 15w-50 saying that 0w-40 is like water (too thin), let alone 5w-30 (which is even thinner than 0w-40 when hot)!

The 994 is one of my favorite Porsches. I'm thinking about selling my 992 to buy one.

Personally I'd go back to the shop and advise them you expect them to replace with the factory specified oil, but if you drain the oil yourself, drain into a clean container and save for your other cars most of which specify 5w-30.
