Post What maintainance makes sense if the engine is out.

I would appreciate your help with the following, but would first just say that I have done a fair amount of searching and cannot find anything that really helps.

Secondly this is not a post by a 993 owner looking to run down 996's they are all Porsches and all great cars just different.

Right with that out of the way a friend of mine has a 1998 996 C2 Tiptronic. Following a recent trackday the car ground to a halt with smoke pouring from the exhaust the current assumption is probably valve train or piston damage.

The engine has to come out for repair, he has already decided to replace the clutch as the car has now covered over 50000 miles.

The question is what else does it make sense to replace with the engine already out on these cars.

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

Is there a clutch to replace on a tip?

There is a good article in the July (?) Excellence about buying a pre - 996 model. I think it is focused more on the 964 but as I recall it did have information on what type of maintenance work to look for and what you can expect to do in future maintenance, etc. Good luck.

I would change all the shaft seals. Cheap and easy with the engine out.

Just an update car is receiving a brand new engine currently on its way from Stuttgart. Out of warranty but dealer is meeting half the cost and installing for free which my friend is delighted about.

PS it does have a clutch and it is being changed.

It's in the gearbox. The A96/00-01 gearbox has a two-disc converter lockup clutch which is being used in gears 2-5.

Cheers,
