Default Sidemarker Mod

I got clear sidemarker covers and needed to mod the lamps to flash with the turn signals (yeah, needed ).

I used the instructions provided HERE , which are quite good. I chose this method because two of the connections are actually inside the trunk, which will reduce the chance of water getting to two of the four splices at least.

One big note: This ins't a 10 minute mod, you need to be very careful with your tools (wire cutters, crimpers, pliers, screwdriver) or you'll scratch your paint. You should take your time to get the wires connected properly so that you don't have to redo anything after it's taped up nice and tight. Plan on at least an hour. I finished in just under 50 minutes -> The passenger side is much faster because you don't have to take half the trunk apart.

A few minor notes that took me a few minutes to figure out:
  • The instructions are written specifically for older 996's.
  • The tool to get the headlights out are in the spare tire (yeah, I never looked before).
  • The right side is the passenger side, left is driver's.
  • If you take the headlights out first, you can reach through the gaping hole to unclip the sidemarkers (instead of having to use the screwdriver method).
  • The wires you will splice into [black/white on one side and black/green on the other] are not alone. There are white/black and a green/black wires as well. You have to decipher which one to splice into. If you're lucky (like me) you'll have the Litronic headlamps. If you look at the connector, one of the wires will be either white/black or green/black. This is the wire you DON'T want to splice into. Makes the decision simple.
  • The Radio Shack splice in connectors feel funny when you connect them, almost like they aren't going to work. I spliced, taped, and prayed.
  • Reuse the clear lamps from your old amber sidemarkers (This is probably not DOT compliant - anyone know for sure?)

Everything worked on the first try (whew). Looks pretty cool too!

I am totally confused, it took me less than a minute to install the clear side lights (pulled out t the old ones, pushed in in the new ones..), they seem to be working fine since I did the install before last Christmas.. is all this splicing and wiring needed..? ( I just followed this instructions that came with mine from Porsche..)

You have clear sidemarkers, but they don't flash. You have to mod the wiring to get them to flash. Note how cool they look when the lights are on - alternating flashing

These are not my pics, I borrowed them from link above:

There is another advantage .... you can see the "car is locked" flash from the sides, as well as dead ahead or behind the car. You'd be surprised how much extra walking and neck craning that saves you in the parking lot during the daylight.

I know what you mean, Kim, as it's quite difficult to tell in daylight whether you had armed the car. Just so I know for sure, I arm the car standing right next to it so I can hear the door-locking mechanism. The flashing side indicators would be helpful, though.

I started out doing the same thing .... but it frustrated me on such a sophisticated car .... to have to be close enough to hear the locks, or to walk around to the front/back to watch the light. I surely did not wish to use the "leave console compartment" method .... that would be an even more frustrating surrender to the problem.

After a while, I came to appreciate the fact that the damn horn doesn't blow upon locking, like every other hot dog in the parking lot .... so the only cure that was left to me was the side marker flash mod. Can be seen from any direction with only a glance over the shoulder at the most.

Bottom line? If this is the biggest problem I have to be frustrated over, then it only confirms what a really great car my 996 is.

The link for the mod is no longer active. Anyone have the instructions for the sidemarker flashing mod that you can point me to? Thanks. (Newbie to this forum)

I did this mod several years ago for this reason. It really did take me around 15 minutes.

Cool mod.

when I was checking out my car before I bought it (my first porsche) I was surprised to find that the side markers did not flash, and had to look it up and found that was the way it was.
