top speed

I hit 160, but in an 89 turbo, not 996 - and it was still climbing pretty fast. Like Jugger, let off when I saw lights ahead. It was a weird feeling going by a car at 100 mph over their speed.
This was after coming through the border crossing on the NB 5 from San Diego and they were looking HARD for something or someone - letting through about 5 cars per minute. I have never seen the freeway that open before or since.

The car will run out of revs before it tops out on speed. I have been up to about 170mph and was close to the rev limiter (2000 996 C4 Cab). Autobahn 7 Sunday morning, all legal! I am a pilot by trade so somewhat slower than Mach 1+ but probably more dangerous since you can not climb or descend to avoid traffic, however no one shooting at you but that is another story for another day.

On another note.....In the old days there was a difference between North American cars and European Porsches (gearing, compression ratio, catalysts...etc) is this still true of the 996 series???

Hit 149 in my 97 Boxster 2.5L...it was still pulling....Hit 160 in my 996 C4...still pulling....i would say that Porsche's numbers are "conservative" considering the top speed of the Boxster is listed at 151 and I am POSITIVE it would have beat that.....

On another note, did 172 mph (!!) on my bike once but "just" 110 mph in the car. The bike thing was done on an open deserted road (~8 miles stretch) and we scanned the road for debris etc before going all out. It's a "once in a life" thing that I don't plan on getting even close to anymore.
I now never go above 95 mph in the car and 80 mph on the bike. Somehow now going very fast doesn't appeal to me as much as driving technical or just enjoying the ride.

Was about to state the same regarding wind resistance. I lose 8mph on my 928 S4 with the lights up. Still, I've had it over 160 (gps confirmed). The 996 has yet to see more than 140 as well as the 986. I don't enjoy the 9X6 as much at speed as the 928s yet the 9X6 cars are so much more fun in the twisties. I guess each has it's own forte and you have to choose the right tool for the job.

There used to be a big difference in power outputs between US and RoW, but improving emissions technology (more efficient cats, etc) mean that most models by most manufacturers are have the same output on either side of the ocean. I'm inclined to believe Porsche's top speed claims, whereas a certain Italian manufacturer has always been know for - shall we say - "optimism".
