top speed
So as I'm preparing for the transition from modified 911 to stock 996, I am wondering if the factory claimed top speeds are for real? My old 911 will pull redline+ in tope gear for hours on end, and is good for about 140 mph, maybe 145 mph (damned old school speedometers are kind sketchy).
What's the word? Has anyone here made 175 mph in a stock C2 ????

JimB has video of his car doing over 150 at Daytona. It looked like the car was still pulling hard before he hit the brakes.
I doubt Porsche would lie about the top speeds.

If you figure out the gear ratio and work the tire diameter into it then I am sure you are able to figure out what the exact top speed is. How long it will take to get to that speed is a different story. You need a lot of road in front of you.

140 mph, ran out of room. Had more to come. This was on stretch of interstate about 8 miles long, straight, and flat. It was around 4:00 am. , no traffic at all at that time. Felt safe enough to attenmpt, let off when I saw lights ahead of me.

I know mine isn't a 996 but after I broke in my 997S in Europe this summer I just happened to look down one time on the autobahn and noticed I was doing 285 kph,--and I had plenty more accelerator to go. If Porsche tells you a top speed for a model you can pretty much expect to be able to do that. Of course, traffic conditions and lane control in the USA are not like those in Europe, sadly...

There's a two lane country road that is North of I-80 and parallels it for miles in Kansas. After picking up my '99 Cab in Houston and driving it home we took this road to avoid the boring Interstate. After traveling at 125 MPH for awhile and getting my wife somewhat comfortable at that speed I eased on the accelerator and watched the speed climb easily to 155 MPH, I wanted to keep going but my passenger started protesting which is usually the case. Hopefully I'll top it out sometime.

Sounds like the 160-165 mph club meetings are regularly attended. I kinda figured 175 mph on public roads would be rare. Even I might consider that kind of....dare I say it...dangerous

153 fastest I ever went late night drive from Allstate arena out to Elgin on the 90. It had a lot more power but late at night who knows who's out there. 174 is very possible.
