Getting a replacement engine, but not X51 !
I have a 40th anniversary with 38,000km on the clock.
Engine failed one day, brought it back to dealer.
Intermediate drive shaft stud broke ( see picture)
A one for one engine replacement, no questions asked.
Now, i have my new engine fitted.
But the engine does not sound as "cammy" and the torque is not as good as my old engine.
Is there any web site i can go to verify if the new engine number is a X51 Package ?
I have a feeling my dealer made a Big mistake and short changed me !
cheers

It might not be as easy as Ray suggests. The replacement engines don't come with headers so for sure you still have the X51 version. You can check to see if the intake manafold is alloy or plastic but that will only tell you if they swapped it. You really won't know if you have the right cams and heads. I'd see if you can get a part number off your heads. That would be a dead giveaway.
Did your dealer claim it's an X51?
Also, an X51 is less torquey below 4500 rpms than the straight 3.6 so I might be that your engine is still just a little tight.

I think that we should start a broken intermediate shaft club. Sportster98xls, you can be president next year. We'd have to come up with a clever name that incorporates the word "shaft". Then the club could market something like "get the big shaft" pills on the Internet.
My first act as club president is to require that the clubhouse not stock any cheap weasel-**** beer.
I wonder if we could do some kind of logo with Richard Roundtree.

Not true, the replacement engines from Porsche are complete. The part number for the 996 X51 engine is 996-100-995-CX so if you have the order you can check it out, there is no indication in the engine type or serial number that I know of to verify.

I still say if the dealer is being honest then an aluminum intake or X51 headers do mean it's an X51 but it would be very very easy to put the old X51 intake and headers on a stock 3.6 and make it look like an X51. It seems very unlikely a dealer would be that dishonest though.

reality check................
engine is ordered by the vin
the dealer makes xxxx$ off the engine
x51 will be more money for the dealer
they are not going to lose out on the possible money by putting the wrong engine in the car
